Away form gives Athletic a decent shout at Halifax
by Dan Childs
GRAYS were booed by their supporters following last Tuesday's disappointing 2-0 loss at home to Weymouth, but they have been enjoying their road trips this season and are worth backing to achieve another positive away result in tonight's Blue Square Premier clash at Halifax.
Athletic have a very young team – 31-year old centre-back Jamie Stuart is the only player in the squad who is in his thirties – and there have certainly been occasions when a lack of experience has let them down.
One of those days transpired last time out when Grays failed to capitalise on their first-half domination over Weymouth and responded poorly when the away side took the lead just after the break.
Grays boss Justin Edinburgh will be annoyed at his players' response to going a goal behind.
His team were not helped by the reaction of some understandably impatient fans who have watched their team lose five of their eight home games this season.
However, while there have been occasions, mainly at home, when they have underperformed, there have also been a number of games where thay have shown what they are capable of.
Athletic are the only team this season to have held leaders Torquay in Devon – they drew 0-0 at Plainmoor.
And they recorded a thumping 5-1 success over Kidderminster in their second home match of the campaign.
Last season, Grays were one of just three teams to record a league win at The Shay – traditionally one of the tougher places to get a result at this level.
Halifax will be hoping that a strong home performance will help them enda disappointing run of five games without a win but boss Chris Wilder has to contend with a number a key absentees.
Banned combative midfielder Anthony Griffith will be missed, but the biggest headache is the absence of strikers Andy Campbell and Jon Shaw, who have netted 12 of Halifax's 21 league goals this term.
Recommendation
Grays draw no bet, 2pts 2-1
Halifax
Midfielder Anthony Griffith and striker Jon Shaw are suspended and forward duo Andy Campbell (Achilles) and Danny Forrest (ankle) are injured. However, target man Darryn Stamp returned from a hamstring injury on Saturday and is available for selection.
Grays
Simon Downer has returned to the squad and the only absentee is Andy Sambrook, who is sidelined with an ankle injury.

Disciplined Venezuelans can frustrate Argentina attack
by Dan Childs
FOUR of the opening five South American qualifiers featured two goals or fewer and tonight's meeting between Venezuela and Argentina could be another low- scoring affair.
Argentina's Juan Roman Riquelme received most of the acclaim for his nation's 2-0 victory at home to Chile – the attacking midfielder shrugged of weeks of inaction at Villarreal by scoring with a couple of trademark free-kicks. However, the bedrock of the Albiceleste's triumph was their solid defence.
And head coach Alfio Basile will be even more focused on his team's defending ahead oftheir clash at the Pachencho Romero Stadium.
The days when Venezuela were South America's whipping boys are long gone and that was emphasised when Richard Paez's side pulled off a fantastic 1-0 victory over Ecuador in the high altitude environment of Quito.
Resolute defending was needed to keep the Ecuadorians at bay and the Vinotinto will try to be just as disciplined when they are facing Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez and company.
Another clean sheet may be beyond the Venezuelans but there is a good chance that they will keep the scoreline respectable and Blue Square's offer of 11-10 about the match featuring fewer than 2.5 goals looks worth an interest.
England Under-21s have taken maximum points from their first three Euro 2008 Championship qualifiers and they are no bigger than 4-5 to keep the winning run going by beating Ireland in Cork tonight.
Manager Stuart Pearce was critical of his team's performance in last Friday's 1-0 win over Montenegro and his team will need to improve if they are going to defeat the Irish.
However, the hosts have been weakened by several injuries – goalkeeper Shane Supple, midfielder Keith Treacy, and defensive pair Keith Keane and Darren Dennehy have been forced to withdraw from the original squad selectedby manager Don Givens.
Recommendation
Under 2.5 goals in Venezuela v Argentina, 2pts 11-10
