New look Aero
The 250 bhp 9-5 Aero sedan and wagon, the sporting flagship of the range, is given more distinctive looks, inside and out, for the new model year which further define its character and strong performance.

Sharper styling for the front and rear bumpers, incorporating matte black grille inserts, and re-profiled sill extensions give both the sedan and wagon variants a lower, more aggressive stance, further underlining their sporting intentions. This is complemented by the addition of new, five-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels - inspired by those first seen on the Saab 9X concept car - and smaller, ''jewel effect' front fog lights.

Inside, the sports leather upholstery is distinguished by contrasting black inserts for the seat squabs, backrests and door panels. The door handles are finished in matte chrome and a black, carbon fiber main fascia insert is now offered as an option.

New 220 bhp engine choice
The range is strengthened by the addition of a 220 bhp, 2.3 turbo engine choice for Linear, Arc and Vector specifications, replacing the 200 bhp 3.0V6t engine above the current 150 and 185 bhp offerings.

In common with the other gasoline engine options, it is a highly responsive unit, delivering strong torque at low engine speeds for safer overtaking and a smooth driving experience requiring fewer gearchanges. It is not necessary to maintain high engine speeds for strong performance because turbocharging ensures that exceptional torque is readily available between 2,000 - 4,000 rpm, the engine speeds used in everyday driving.

The 16-valve engine features direct ignition, Saab Trionic 7 engine management and counter-rotating balancer shafts for exceptional refinement. It produces 220 bhp at 5,500 rpm and impressive maximum torque of 310 Nm between 1,900 and 4,500 rpm.

With brisk acceleration (0-100 kph in 7.7 secs) and typically strong low/mid-range torque (11.0 secs for 80-120 kph, 5th gear), the new engine is available with manual and automatic transmission. Badged as '2.3T', it offers a more performance-orientated choice throughout the range, between the 185 bhp engine and the 250 bhp Aero model.

It is supplied as standard with TCS and ESP, as is the 176 bhp, 3.0V6 TiD unit for the new model year.

Interior and exterior improvements
The 9-5's spacious cabin is given a fresher look by of the introduction of a lighter gray leather upholstery, which replaces charcoal. The front fascia is now also finished in matte black, instead of gray, to give a crisper, sportier appearance.

The Saab Information Display (SID) is updated with greater capacity and graphics similar to those found on the 9-3 Sport Sedan. It also adopts the
9-3's seat-belt reminder function, which independently informs the driver and the front passenger of a non-belt usage, using tell-tales and warning sounds based on speed and time.

When it was first assessed under the EuroNCAP crash test program, the Saab 9-5 achieved the highest score awarded at that time. Following the adoption of the new seat-belt reminder system, it has now been given a maximum 5-star rating.

Externally, three new metallic colors are added to the range: Expresso black; Nocturne, a sporty mid-blue, and Glacier blue, a paler shade.

New six-speed gearbox options
Cruising refinement and fuel consumption for 2.2TiD variants can be improved still further by the availability of a six-speed manual gearbox, instead of the standard five-speed manual.

It is fitted with a tall top gear, yielding 53.3 kph per 1,000 rpm, which combines relaxed motorway cruising with impressive levels of economy, 8.9 and 5.2 liters/100 km, respectively, over the urban and extra-urban cycles.

9-3 Aero customers can enjoy an even more focused driving experience by specifying an all-new, close ratio, six-speed manual gearbox, now offered as an option. Compared to the previous standard six-speed unit, the more tightly spaced gears allow a slightly quicker 0-100 kph acceleration, as well as faster in-gear responses.

Greater choice inside and out
Two new wood veneer trims, more metallic colors and further alloy wheel options allow customers greater scope in satisfying their personal preferences.

The Linear form now includes a hard-wearing, black synthetic textile as standard for the seat upholstery and door panels. A wool-based, barrathea cloth or soft, rucched leather, both in parchment or gray, are now optional.

A high gloss, wood-effect finish for the door trim inserts and center gearshift molding, replacing poplar, becomes standard for the Arc form. Linear, Arc, Vector and Aero also include a stylish, dark gray or deep red walnut veneer as options.

Externally, two new blue and a black metallic color are added to the range, together with a further 17-inch alloy wheel option.

GPRS phone for improved communication
An integrated GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) telephone with Bluetooth ™ connectivity now replaces the GSM (General Service Mobile communication) unit, providing a four-fold increase in data transmission capacity.

The phone is available as an option with the Saab Infotainment or Saab Infotainment Plus systems and includes a keypad, steering wheel controls and voice recognition. It offers a wireless connection to a Bluetooth-qualified headset via a 'push-to-talk' steering wheel button.

When used with an optional WAP browser, GPRS functionality allows faster and more cost-effective downloading of data through a Laptop, including automatic access to incoming telephone calls during transmissions.
