Siirtyykö Berbatov Manu:un, kuten on kovasti huhuiltu? Siinä tapauksessa Tottenham on paperilla heikompi kuin viime kaudella et sillei hei! Tosin nyt valmennus toivottavasti kunnossa alusta lähtien. Portsmouth on varmasti kova pala Chelsealle. ManU:n hyökkäjille (Saha ja Tévez?) voi tulla yllättävän hankala peli Newcastlen heikkoa puolustusta vastaan - avauspeli on usein yllätyksellinen.

The English Premier league starts today Saturday 16 of August and now is the right time to look what changes have been made during the summer. There has been a lot of movement in the transfer markets and a few transfers are expected to happen before the league starts up. There are still only four noteworthy teams to win the premiership, the four big teams, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool will battle for the trophy. I found it hard to believe that the champion will come outside these teams. But there are a few teams which really want to challenge the big teams, at least if you look the mounts of money spend in the transfer markets.
Manchester United were the winners in season 2007/2008 after a tight race with Chelsea, and more could water was poured on to Chelsea players in Champions League final at Moscow. Portsmouth was the winner in FA-cup, the third trophy that matters in England, but I think they were a bit lucky to steal the trophy. Manchester United has now won two in a row and when this is combined to CL success last season the past years have been good for United. In overall the season 2008/2009 will be much harder for all teams and we might see some surprises during the season.

United squad for this season is almost the same as last season, and yes Cristiano Ronaldo is still in the team. I think that Sir Alex will still bring one new player to Old Trafford at some point, if suitable player is available. Start of the new season may be hard for United because the team is hit by many injuries. Rooney may miss the start of the season and Carrick is big doubt. Hargraves, Nani, Anderson, Ronaldo and Park Ji Sung are all suffering problems with their health. It is interesting to see what is the chemistry inside the team after the whole Ronaldo transfer saga, hopefully there is no negative effect. I hope that United can get some trophy this season but it will be really hard.
Chelsea FC

The runner-up in Premier league and CL for last season, big disappointment for the team and its Russian owner. New coach for Chelsea after Scolari was hired for the job, the man has lot of succeeded in international football and it is interesting to see what he can do with Chelsea. Only two new players to the team, well Deco is a good player and has a lot of experience. In Chelsea's case it is interesting to see will the disappointment of last season take its toll, but maybe they can get more motivation from it. Not happy to write this but Chelsea is the favorite to take the trophy.
Liverpool FC

A lot of movement in Liverpool squad and one big signing from Tottenham Robbie Keane, he should bring more power to Liverpool's scoring arsenal. Benitez also still wants to sign Gareth Barry from Aston Villa, but this is not a done deal yet. If Barry is signed Benitez has to sell some player to get the money for Barry. I don't really give much of a credit to Benitez and he's style to rotate players, it hasn't prove to be really successful in the Premier league. Liverpool squad is this season stronger than for long time, but I don´t believe that Liverpool is ready to go pass United or Chelsea.
Arsenal FC

A great start from Arsenal in last season but they couldn't keep up the pace with Chelsea and Man United, this was mostly due to a lot of injuries to key players. Arsenal has had the same problem with injuries in past seasons and even with their talented young players the squad has been too narrow for competing for the title. One of Arsenals problem areas is between the posts and I'm not sure is Almundia good enough to carry Arsenal in tough times. Arsenal is a good team but no big success in this season for the Gunners.
For rest of the teams I think we will see strong performances at least from Tottenham and Fulham for the season. For the first round of Premier League vartia has some good picks like Sunderland and Fulham. I agree with Vartia about the Sunderland team and I think that Keano is a good manager, but second season in Premier League has usually been harder for new teams. Fulham made a miracle escape last season and they can thank Roy Hodgson for that. It is probable that Fulham will play same kind of football than the Finns under Hodgson's command and in this case they are under 2,5 team for the season.
