Both in Finland and Estonia the neo-nazis have found the russian minority an easy target as deep recession rises hostile sentiments. Bäckman has been defender of russian minority in both countries and been labeled as traitor by the unpopular right wing governments as Euro parlament election approaches. Bäckman as famous university scholar is a popular EP candidate of left wing esp. among the immigrant community of Finland.
