SEX IN PLANTS

53-…. And has sent down water from the sky. With it have we produced diverse pairs of plants...
20-Ta Ha, 53

3-…And fruit of every kind He made in pairs two and two.
13-The Thunder, 3

During the time of the Prophet, biology was not a developed science and the system of reproduction of plants was not known. Differentiation of sex in plants was to be a later discovery. The production of diverse pairs of plants as stated in the Quran 1400 years ago is very meaningful.

Most species of plants exhibit features of sex, namely, the production of specialized sex cells or gametes and the fusion of these cells in pairs, called fertilization. In flowering plants, the gametes are produced within the flowers. In the female portion forming a bulge is the egg of plants, the ovum which contains small and round seeds. The sperms are produced within the pollen tubes, long and slender structures that develop from the microscopic pollen grains transferred by wind or insects or other agents from the pollen producing organs of the flower to the stigma of the pistil. Inside the pistil are ovules, within each of them a female sex cell (egg) is produced. Pollen tubes grow into the pistil and reach and penetrate the ovules, a single sperm fertilizing the single egg within an ovule. The fertilized egg develops into the embryo of the seed and the ovule eventually becomes the mature seed. The pollen grain with its tube and contents is the male gametophyte of a flowering plant and the central tissue (embryo sac) of the ovule with its egg constitutes the female gametophyte of a flowering plant.

PERFECT HARMONY

Plants are of almost infinite variety, their range stretching from the tiniest of plants to the gigantic Californian redwood (Mammoth tree) reaching a height of 90 meters. In plants reproducing sexually male and female organs are differentiated. They have an extremely complex and perfect microscopic world. Thousands and thousands of female and male organs fit each other as if encoded. Had this harmony been a little bit less perfect, none of these plants could have perpetuated their species, since everything depended on these male and female reproductive organs. The least defect in any of them would mean the end of that particular species. These organs must exist in perfect condition on the same species of plant within the same time bracket. This impeccable order shows once again the perfection of the Creator’s design, which leaves no room whatsoever for coincidences. A complex code designed to unlock quadrillions of safes cannot possibly be the result of fortuitousness. The case of plants’ sexual reproduction is even more complicated, and, last but not least, the sexuality in plants and reproduction are but one of the many aspects of the creation of plants. Every plant in its impeccable form, is an ornament of our world, a part of our ecological system, a miracle of creation.

SOIL THAT VIBRATES AND SWELLS AS IT COMES TO LIFE

It is the general knowledge that where there are no air and water there is no life. Does it ever to occur to anyone that soil also is a prerequisite to life? The soil is in continuous development. Throughout thousands of years, especially by the effect of water, it had undergone transformation by vertical erosion of the lithosphere. As the rate of this erosion is 0.01mm per year in hard rocks, this transformation is imperceptible (This rate rises up to 20mm in warmer regions). In this transition process, the earth rises from the inorganic world of minerals to an organic sphere. In a fertile land of 1m3 there are some 30 million bacteria. These imperceptible bacteria prove that every inch of the soil is living, returned to life by rainwater.

5-… You see the earth barren and lifeless, but when we pour down water on it, it vibrates it swells and puts forth every kind of beautiful growth in pairs.
22-Pilgrimage,5

The verse refers to reactions that occur in series after rainfall. The vibrating and swelling of soil were at first believed to be literary expressions. But Robert Brown’s discovery of the earth’s shaking referred to as Brownian movement the Quran’s statements came to life. Three stages are mentioned in the Quran, namely

1) Earth’s vibrating

2) Earth’s swelling and

3) Earth’s products in pairs.

1) In the particles in the soil begin moving upon the fall of rainwater. Raindrops falling on the earth at random move in every direction. The particles are ionized. They are positively ionized as there is a fall in the electrical charge and negatively ionized as there is a rise in the electrical charge. With the arrival of water the ionized molecules begin vibrating. Robert Brown, who discovered this phenomenon in 1828, called this movement. ‘Brownian movement’. It is the process activated by the fall of water upon the soil.

2) The second point refers to the growing in size of earth’s particles as they absorb water. Soil particles are composed of joint layers. Between any two layers, there are spaces, that would allow water particles and dissiolved ions to enter. When water and the nourishing elements dissolve in it, they diffuse between layers, this would result in the swelling of the size of the soil particles. Thanks to soil’s property of holding water, preventing its penetration any deeper, organisms and plants can live.

3) The third stage refers to germination of seeds. As the verse points out, the fertilization process has started. The soil that seemed dead, comes to life thanks to water, giving in turn life to vegetation that begins to sprout.

There are many references to the creation of plants. Parallels are drawn between the creation and restoration to life of plants and the resurrection raising from the dead. The period when a plant begins to sprout is likened to youth, and the period when the plant ripens the adolescent becomes mature. Just like a man gets weaker and frailer as he grows older and wrinkles appear on his skin, so are plants dry and lose their luster. When it dies, it is mixed with earth like the corpse of a man. As plants grow again, so will the man raise from the dead. God, Who causes plants to die every year only to regenerate it, so will He raise men from the dead.

33- One sign for them is the dead land. We revive it and produce from it grains which they eat.
36-Ya Sin, 33
