Perhaps you could have said: "I'm sorry I've wasted your time", or "Thank you for your time anyway". Don't try to translate from Finnish word by word. Each language has its own phrases. Well, my English is not so good, so what I suggested may not be the most appropriate thing to say.

Did you mean my suggestion? It may be rubbish, but I think it sounds better than mentioning 'bothering' and 'for nothing'. I may be wrong. If you can suggest something more civil, please do.

with "bothering for nothing", it's being used everyday. Maybe not taught at the Finnish peruskoulu.
I can suggest something else, maybe a bit too flowery but definitely more polite: 'Dear Sir, I am crestfallen that the time we spent on this endeavor has come to naught." ;)

Sorry I bothered you for nothing ja monet muut ehdotetut ovat ehka ainakin Briteille liian sarkastiselta kuulostavia. Itse taalla 20v asuneena sanon 'thank you (very much) for your time'. Sita ennen sanon, mita paatimme tehda, esim. 'We decided not to go ahead with the project/we've accepted another offer...but thank you very much for you time (anyway)'.
