Bulgarian participants in the popular virtual reality site Second Life have announced their idea to build an Orthodox church in the Internet space. Though the forum of the popular Bulgarian Orthodox site Pravoslavie.BG they have addressed Bulgarian priests with a request to cooperate in the "sanctification" of the church and in the implementation of virtual church services.

Second Life is a 3D world created by the Linden Research company. Unlike many popular online games, in SL there is no formal plot. The virtual space where everyone can register, provides limitless freedom to its citizens. They can spend their time any way they like - they can start a business, see friends, visit concerts or just walk in the gardens. Initial registration is free, but SF has its own currency which can be obtained in all possible ways of market economy, also in exchange for real money. People are allowed to purchase virtual land where they can build different premises. The new Orthodox church will be built In a Bulgarian-owned piece of land.

The total population of the virtual world is over 4,5 mln, according to official SF sources. Some of them already make their living entirely online - by selling goods and services to other SF customers.

The Bulgarian community in SF is about 100 people. They possess 5 acres of virtual land, donated by Premium account members. Time will show if the idea for an Orthodox church and for the virtual presense of the Church altogether is in consistence with the Orthodox understanding of mission and if such "unorthodox" missionary activity will be tolerated by the priests
