The composer and aesthetic experience in the writings of E.T.A. Hoffmann
In the context of wider historical and aesthetic considerations, I wish to bring up aspects in Hoffmann's aesthetics that have until now been undervalued, namely the overlapping of the physical and the spiritual in aesthetic experience. The study of the physical in Hoffmann's aesthetic considerations opens a less researched view on the role of physicality in romantic thinking in general. More importantly, it shifts the image of Hoffmann as a champion of mere musically sublimated sensualism toward a more generous and earthbound portrayer of the musical experience.

Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann (24. tammikuuta 1776 Königsberg, Itä-Preussi – 25. kesäkuuta 1822 Berliini) oli saksalainen kirjailija, juristi, säveltäjä, musiikkikriitikko, piirtäjä ja karikatyristi. Hoffmann on jäänyt kirjallisuushistoriaan lyhennetyssä muodossaan E. T. A. Hoffmann. Parhaiten Hoffmann tunnetaan teoksestaan Pähkinänsärkijä jonka pohjalta Pjotr Tšaikovski sävelsi tunnetun baletin. Hoffmannista itsestäänkin on tehty ooppera, Jacques Offenbachin Hoffmanin kertomukset (1879). Jules Barbierin libretto perustuu hänen ja Michel Carrén näytelmään (1851), joka taas perustuu Hoffmanin kertomuksiin, joiden päähenkilönä hän itse seikkailee.
Hoffmann alkuperäiset etunimet olivat Ernst Theodor Wilhelm, mutta muutti myöhemmin Mozartia kunnioittaakseen kolmannen etunimensä Amadeukseksi."

"...Tarinan mukaan Nooa jakoi maailman poikiensa kesken kolmeen osaan. Erityisen hyveellinen Jafet sai Euroopan, ja sitä mukaa muiden maaosien tulkittiin olevan alisteisia Euroopalle.
Meistäkin tuli eurooppalaisia ja mitäköhän muuta voisimmekaan olla. Suomalainen demokratia, oikeusjärjestys, tapamme elää, etiikkamme – kaikki ne ovat eurooppalaista perua. Aivan samalla tavalla kuin muissakin Pohjoismaissa. Kun pidämme omasta perinteestämme kiinni, pidämme samalla kiinni eurooppalaisuudesta...."
