Mandatory Swedish grows from prejudices?

A young Swedish-speaking teacher told she fears the gap between Finnish-speakers and Swedish-speakers would grow if the mandatory Swedish was removed. “I think prejudices would spread. I fear that my children and grandchildren will be growing up in a hostile environment where Swedish is considered to be an unnecessary language.”

I'm grateful for her honesty but I feel this reveals what kind of feelings there are behind mandatory Swedish. Swedish-speaking people think that my children (and their children in future) who grow with quite many languages among their friends in their school classes would be hostile to Swedish-speakers unless they learn Swedish.

One should take this kind of prejudices into discussion. It it simply wrong to demand mandatory Swedish from all finns and newfinns just because of fears and prejudices against them.

Tuo on TAAS yksi surkea perustelu väärämieliselle pakkoruotsitukselle.

Decades ago, the birth of mandatory Swedish is based on the (wrong) idea, that it would be unfair for Swedish speaking people to have to learn Finnish, while Finnish speakers could choose another language than Swedish. There is no study based on certain need to use the language, neither a study examining relations between Finnish and Swedish speaking families. Only politics.

Of course, through politics and legislation, the need is artificially made a fact. The future need is explained by supporters by referring to existing legislation.

People in Åland islands recently started to think pragmatically, and have removed Finnish from their list of compulsory subjects in school. Decision makers in mainland are for some reason reluctant to make similar moves.

In the future, we may have a generation or two, who are a bit angry, since their parents and grandparents have forced them to invest in futile skills - in terms of having the best toolset everywhere in the globe, and not just Åland islands or few municipalities rich of Swedish speakers.

"Hate toward Swedish speakers" is something the supporters of current legislation have to use, since their other arguments have been proven wrong. It is imperative for them to drive the discussion away from facts, away from future predictments and away from what students theirselves see most valuable.

In my opinion, Behind the curtains lurks the Game Theory:
Swedish speaking students have easier acceptance criteria to some fields in the University. Also, in practise, it is easier to obtain a public post with fluent Swedish.

Perhaps Finnish speakers could pay "some ransom", and give the extra points to children from Swedish speaking families, in exchange of a more free language system?

  • Whatever, but we the "Swedish speakers" in Finland also wish to learn more important language, than finnish from the third class at school. As everyone knows we are already speaking the finnish language good enough to get by in Finland.

Why waste precious school time in a language that is only needed in Finland? In our opinion it is very stupid and a total waste of time to study a language that most of us are speaking fluently.

So way hasn´t that been changed decades ago? To state that something went wrong from the beginning is of course quite possible. But in that case the things would of course have been corrected.

All the parliament votings on the matter, and there has been at least one every decade since the sixties, the results have been overwhelmingly clear!

""Hate toward Swedish speakers" is something the supporters of current legislation have to use, since their other arguments have been proven wrong."

Since when has it been even theoretically possible to prove opinions wrong? In fact, of course, there are many good reasons to stick to our system, and there are many good reasons to change it.

The hate towards minorities are usually not fixed by simple legislation.

"Swedish speaking students have easier acceptance criteria to some fields"

There are of course no Quotas for Swedish speaking. But there are a few schools where the teaching language is Swedish, and you need to show prove that you can cope with that. That, by the way, is one of the reasons stick to our system. With good grades in Swedish you can apply for a larger number of polytechnics and universities.

The Swedish speaking are usually fluent enough in Finnish to apply for schools in both categories. So the reason behind the fact that Swedish speaking fare better in the "market for studies" is there better language skills.

Do you really believe that our parliament would like this gap to widen even more? Do you think that would be good for our society and to the relation between the the two groups?

There is no gap. For the most part (over 90%) they speak better Finnish than we do. There's no reason to learn Swedish. In the few cases where a translator is needed, software can be used. The performance of said software is rapidly improving.

TV1:llä joku tanskalainen historianopettaja kertoi rotuerottelun historiaa.

(koko artikkeli luettavissa googlaamalla)

HBL, 18.1.2008:

"It it simply wrong to demand mandatory Swedish from all finns and newfinns just because of fears and prejudices against them. "

Do you really believe that the decisions of the Finnish parliament is based on prejudices only? The question has been up for a vote several times during the last forty years and our prevailing system has always got at least 80% of the votes.

And by the way. The rhetoric tactics based on "once somebody told me" is just a bit too suspicious in my view. We are used to read and hear those stories, and they always tent to be the more or less the same and tend to point in only one direction.

I for one do not share the views of your "Swedish speaking teacher" which of course invalidates your line of reasoning that prejudices would be the driving force in the matter. In fact I do not believe prejudices have the slightest impact!
