Verbi Kastaa - baptizô
Editoitu 24.12.01
1. baptizô (# 907 Strong’s:in numerojärjestelmässä) – verbi - kastaa
2. baptisma (# 908, Strong’s) – substantiivi - kaste
3. baptistês (# 910, Strong’s) – substantiivi – kastaja
Näiden kolmen lisäksi on olemassa sanat baptismos ( # 909) sekä baptô (# 911), mutta niitä ei käytetä UT:ssa kristillisen kasteen yhteydessä, joten en käsittele niitä. Katsellaan sanaa baptizô. Katsotaan mitä leksikot sanovat tästä sanasta.
Baptizô
1. The Complete Word Study Dictionary, New Testament – Spiros Zodhiates Th.D.
# 907 baptizô. Immerse, submerge for a religious purpose, to overwhelm, saturate, baptize.
2. The Analytical Greek Lexicon – Wesley J Perschbacher

Baptizô. To baptize, primarily a frequentative form of baptô, to dip, was used among the Greeks to signify the dyeing of a garment, or the drawing of water by dipping a vessel into another, etc. Plutarchus uses it of the drawing of wine by dipping the cup into the bowl (Alexis, 67) and Plato, metaphorically, of being owerwhelmed with questions (Euthydemus, 277 D).
6. Thayer’s Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament – Joseph H Thayer
# 907 baptizô. I. 1. Prop. to dip repeatedly, to immerge, submerge, (of vessels sunk, Polyb. 1, 51, 6; 8, 8, 4; of animals, Diod. 1, 36). 2. To cleanse by dipping or submerging, to wash, to make clean with water. 3. Metaph. to overwhelm.
7. A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and other early Christian literature – W F Arndt and F W Gingrich

Baptizô. To dip, immerse, sink, to overwhelm, to perform ablutions, wash oneself, bathe. Of ablution, immersion, as a religious rite, to baptize.
9. A Concise Lexicon to the Biblical Languages, Hebrew Greek English – Green & Robinson
# 907 baptizô. To immerse, (lit. to make whelmed), to dip; to wash, to baptize
10. Greek Testament Vocabulary and Synonyms – S G Green D.D.

11. A Lexicon Abridged from Liddell and Scott’s Greek-English Lexicon, 22nd edition – Liddell & Scott
Baptizô. To dip repeatedly, dip under, to bathe, to baptize
12. Greek Verbs Irregular and Defective – William Veitch LL.D
Baptizô. See baptô – to dip.
13. Vincent’s Word Studies in the New Testament – Marvin R Vincent D.D.
Comment on Mark 7:4 – baptizôntai: In classical Greek the primary meaning is to merse. Examples: ”They sank (ebaptizôn) many of the ships” (Polybius), ”They overwhelmed (ebaptisan) the city” (Josephus), ”drowned in drink (bebaptismenoi) (Plato). The New Testament use of the word to denote submersion for a religious purpose, may be traced back to the Levitical washings.
Marvin Vincent lyhyesti mainitsee että baptizô sana joskus voi tarkoittaa pesemistä (washing) tai pirskottamista (sprinkling).
14. Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, abridged by G W Bromiley – Gerhard Kittel and Gerhard Friedrich
The meaning of baptô and baptizô. Baptô, ”to dip in or under”, ”to dye”, ”to immerse”, ”to sink”, ”to drown”, ”to bathe”, ”wash”. The NT uses baptô only in the literal sense, e.g., ”to dip” (Lk. 16:24), ”to dye” (Rev. 19:13), and baptizô only in a cultic sense, mostly ”to baptize”.
15. CLASSIC GREEK-ENGLISH DICT. By POLLET.
Greek word baptizo means to dip under.
16. SCHAFF-HERZOG RELIGIOUS ENCYCLOPEDIA.
Baptism was always a burial. The command to baptize was a command to immerse. Vol 1. pg.451
17. Cremer's Biblico Theological Lexicon- "Baptize, immerse, submerge."
18. Timothy and Barbara Friberg. Analytical Lexicon to the Greek New Testament.
Strictly, dip, immerse in water; mid[dle voice] dip oneself, wash; pred[ominantly] of the use of water in a relig[ious] and symbolic sense in the NT….
Tässä nähtiin että leksikot ovat hämmästyttävän yhtäpitäviä siitä että sana baptizô ei tarkoita pirskottamista eikä valelemista. Eikä sitä näin käytetty UT:ssa eikä klassisissa teoksissa. Jopa etevimmät teologit (Campbell, MacKnight, Doddridge) ja historiotsijat (Mosheim) pirskottajien keskuudessa myöntävät tämän. Vertaa näiden Lutherilaisten sanoihin:
a. "The sacrament of baptism was administered in this century
(the first) without the public assemblies, in places appointed and prepared for that purpose, and was performed by an immersion of the whole body in the baptismal font." - MOSHEIM (Mosheim's Church History)
b. "For the explanation of this figurative description of the
baptismal rite, it is necessary to call attention to the well-known circumstance that in the early days of the church, persons, when baptized, were first plunged below and then raised above the water." - THOLUCK (Commentary on Romans)
Ja vielä muutama tunnettu pirskottaja rehellisesti myöntää:
John Wesley (Methodist)-commenting on Rom 6:4- "We are buried with Him- alluding to the ancient manner of baptism by IMMERSION (Explanatory notes Upon the New Testament, p. 376)
George Whitefield (Methodist)-commenting on Rom 6:4- "It is certain that the words of our text is an allusion to the manner of baptism by IMMERSION
Conybeare and Howson (Episcopalians)-commenting on Rom 6:4-":This passage cannot be undersood unless it is understood that the primitive baptism was by IMMERSION."
John Calvin (Presbyterian)-"The very word "baptize however, signifies to IMMERSE, and it is certain that IMMERSION was the practice of the ancient church."(Institutes, chpt 15)
Martin Luther (Lutheran)-" I could wish that the baptized should be totally IMMERSED according to the meaning of the word."
Philip Schaff(Lutheran)-"IMMERSION and not sprinkling was unquestionably the original normal form of baptism. This is shown by the meaning of the Greek word and the analogy of the baptism of John which was performed in Jordan." (History of the Apostolic Church, p.568).
Pirskottaminen on ihmisten perinnäisoppi (Matt. 15:6-8) eikä Raamatun mukaista eikä Jumalan säätämä kastetapa. Samaten monet etevät teologit (John Calvin, Jeremy Taylor, Neander) pirskottajien keskuudessa myöntävät että vauvakastelu ei ole Raamatullista, vaan että se on perinne joka tuli apostolien jälkeen. Raamattu on selvä. Kristillinen kaste tapahtui upottamalla – baptizô. UT ei koskaan käytä sanaa ekcheô (# 1632, valella) kristillisen kasteen yhteydessä, eikä katacheô (# 2708, kaataa), eikä sanaa spendô (# 4689, kaataa ulos). Samaten UT ei koskaan käytä sanaa rantizô (# 4472, ripotella, pirskottaa, vihmoa) kristillisen kasteen yhteydessä.
KR-38, todennäköisesti luterilaisten vauvakastelijoiden kääntämä, kääntää ainakin kahdessa kohtaa väärin, Matt. 3:11 & Joh. 1:26.
Matt. 3:11:
egô men baptizô umas en udati = minä totisesti olen kastamassa teitä vedessä…
[KR-38 - Minä kastan teidät vedellä] Tämä KR-38:n väärä käännös näyttää tukevan vauvakastelijoiden pirskottamista. Mutta historian aikana monet käännökset ovat kääntäneet oikein:
"I baptize you in water" (1526 & 1534 Tyndale's Bible)
"I baptize you in water" (1537 Matthew's Bible)
"I baptize you in water" (1539 Great Bible)
"I baptize you in water" (1568 Bishops' Bible)
"I indeed immerse you in water" (1842 Bernard's Bible).
"I indeed am immersing you in water" (Rotherham's Emphasized Bible).
"I indeed baptize you in water" (1901 American Standard Version).
"I indeed immerse you in water" (1961 Wuest’s Expanded Translation).
"I indeed baptize you in water" (1998 Green's Literal Translation).
Joh. 1:26:
egô baptizô en udati = minä olen kastamassa vedessä.
Vrt. KR-38: …
Ilm. 2:9). He ovat osa suurta Babylonia, jonka Herra Jumala väkevyydessään on tuhoava, ks. Ilm. 18:2-8. (Ilm. 18:7b-8). Aamen.
