Giuliana Rancic blames controversial Zendaya Coleman dreadlocks comments on Fashion Police writers

Fashion Police host Giuliana Rancic has blamed her recent controversial comments about Zendaya Coleman dreadlocks on the show's writers.

The host sparked outrage earlier this week when she said 18-year-old Disney star Zendaya Coleman's hair on the Oscars red carpet would smell of "patchouili" or "weed".

Now however she has reportedly claimed the whole joke was scripted - and not 'off the cuff' as it previously seemed.

Access Hollywood‘s Billy Bush released a statement this week, having spoken to the star, and claimed she was simply following a pre-approved script.

“Giuliana Rancic’s comments about Zendaya’s dreadlocks might have seemed off the cuff, but Access Hollywood has learned otherwise,” the statement claimed.

“Billy Bush spoke directly to Giuliana Rancic this morning and has learned that her comments that the 18-year-old’s dreadlocks looked like they smelled like ‘patchouli’ and ‘maybe weed,’ were penned by a Fashion Police show writer, and not something Giuliana came up with on her own.”

It went on: “Billy also asked about reports of Kelly Osbourne stopping the segment and telling her Fashion Police colleagues they can’t make comments like that about Zendaya.

"According to Giuliana, none of this is true. What she said actually happened is that Kathy Griffin spoke up and asked ‘Who is Zendaya?’ to which Kelly responded, wait a minute, let’s not act like we don’t know her. She’s been a guest host on the show a couple of times.”

“Fashion Police is a comedy show, and because there was such a fast turn-around time between Oscar night and taping that show Monday morning, they had to have a few things planted, according to Giuliana,” the statement said.

“A writer wrote the line that got Giuliana in trouble. Nobody saw it as racist. The original joke was patchouli, and there was a follow-up joke that never made it to air. It said ‘I heard she’s going on tour with the Grateful Dead,’ alluding that the joke was referring to hippie culture.”

A source added to Mail Online: "The joke didn't originate with Giuliana, the jokes were written out before, as is often the case on Fashion Police."

Rancic has since apologised, and said: "I’d really like to address something that is weighing very heavy on my heart. I want to apologize for a comment that I made on last night’s Fashion Police about Zendaya’s hair.

"Now, as you know, Fashion Police is a show that pokes fun at celebrities in good spirit, but I do understand that something I said last night did cross the line.

"I just want everyone to know I didn’t intend to hurt anybody. But I have learned it is not my intent that matters, it’s the result. And the result is that people are offended, including Zendaya and that is not OK."

Rancic - who was blasted by Zendaya in response to the comments - went on to describe the controversy as a "learning experience" about the damage "stereotypes" can do.

She continued: "I want to say to Zendaya and anyone else out there that I have hurt, that I am so, so sincerely sorry. This really has been a learning experience for me.

"I’ve learned a lot today and this incident has taught me to be a lot more aware of clichés and stereotypes — how much damage they can do — and that I am responsible, as we all are, to not perpetuate them further.”

Meanwhile, Kelly Osbourne has hit out after she was accused of making a comment that Zendaya may also smell like "weed" .

She has denied making the comment, and threatened to quit the show over the backlash she has received.

"I'm giving everyone involved 24 hours to make it right or the world will hear how I really feel. Contractually I'm not allowed to speak!

"I DID NOT MAKE THE WEED COMENT. I DO NOT CONDONE RACISM SO AS A RESULT OF THIS IM SERIOUSLY QUESTIONING STAYING ON THE SHOW!"
