Hi out there.
You have to admit that Finland is not the best place to make easily new friends.
But I have to admit that I am not the most talented person to find friends either.
So, I guess that is the reason why I am sometimes a little bit loney here in Helsinki.
What would you propose to do in order to get to know/meet new and interesting people?

in love and lonely? well...meet shy people, they are always interesting, and yes Finland is full of shy people. also me. lol Seriously if you happen to like for example music, why not join certain discussion boards and so on...anyway search within interests. That's a good advice. LOL

First of all my apologies on behalf of that "Ich" person who answered 3 times. She is a sort of "village idiot" we have here in this forum, you're better off if you just skip her ramblings. :)
You didn't say what it is you do here? Are you working or studying, and isn't there any colleagues who you could go out with? Also, how long are you here? If you're going to stay, it's not a bad idea to take a course in finnish. You meet new people in the class and also learn our "difficult" language. ;) You can find classes and info about studying from http://opisto.hel.fi , the pages are also in english.
Also you might try to find someone from the Internet, if you're not up to bars and gigs. There is a singles-portal www.deitti.net but I think that's all in finnish. You might try to post something there. People also search for friends there, not just "lovers".
Last but not least, humour about us finns:

First thanks for your help.
Yes I try to learn Finish since more than 2 years but I am still far away from really talking. I do not get much exercises in speaking because at work I can speak English only.
Do you have any idea for a sportive activity where it is easy to meet new people. Because I found out that when doing some sport with others I feel much more comfortable and relaxed and therefore more natural.
Maybe someone knows a sport club (dancing, cross country skiing, ice skating, ...) where I could have some fun with the sport and meet new people and practice at the same time my Finish.
I tried already Yoga, but this is too "induvidual" and i did not even get close of getting to know new people. SO any other ideas?
Well, if you're into sports, floorball or sähly is very popular in Finland and I think that might be the easiest sport to learn and also it's probable very easy to find a team. Sähly is kinda like ice-hockey, except theres no ice or skating, and the puck is a small ball. When playing sähly you get to run a lot, so it's a good way to stay in shape.
SOme info about sähly is here: http://salibandy.net/liitto/english/ you might try to contact the email-address for info of the nearest "recruiting" teams in your area.
http://www.danceinfo.fi/ pages also in English
Thanks about your information.
I heard already about the Finish floorball. Let's see if it will work out.
Also thanks for the link. I could not find any detailed info about courses/classes, but I guess I will go to the place and ask myself.
Hi Nanni, welcome to Finland. It's not easy to make friends anywhere I believe. I spent a year in USA and I realized there it's easy to have people talking to you but when you really need a friend they're not there. If you make a friend over here, she/he's a friend all the way, no matter what. It may take more time but then again the friendship you grow with a Finnish person could be the best one you ever had, and will last forever. So, you didn't tell what brought you here and where you're from? Also how old are you? Here in this forum there's always ignorant people who has a need to make silly comments whenever possible. Don't mind about them.
Well, you should have only taken a glance at her nickname to get her age...and click her nickname to get further information. She is about 30 years, comes from Germany and has worked in Helsinki since two years...
Wasn't hard at all! ;D
You didnt mention, where You are from ?
From it depends, what my answer is to You.
Many foreigners dont know anything about Finland & Helsinki before coming to this beautiful Capital of Finland.
Many people has never even seen snow before, or been to sauna ?
Many come from countries that has totally diffrent culture, and live with very large families...
It takes about one year to feel at home in Helsinki ?
Like mentioned on my profile, I am German.
I live already more than 2 years in Helsinki. And I know already some things about Finland/Helsinki, but this doesn't really help finding/getting friends. And I have also seen snow and sauna already (even though I don't think it makes a difference in finding friends or not).
Hello. Perhaps you should participate in some internet dicussions, chat rooms etc. You have a point there while saying that it's difficult to create contacts, make friends etc. here in Finland. But the brighter side of this very fact is that if you manage to have friends, it's a permanent condition in most of the issues ;D.
