Greenpeace: Turkey is not the EU's Garbage Dump
Greenpeace is demonstrating against European Union (EU) countries for sending their toxic waste loaded ships to be taken apart to Aliaga, Izmir. With banners reading 'Turkey is not the EU's garbage dump,' environmentalists demonstrated in front of the Turkish Agency of the EU displaying glass vials of toxic waste, seawater, and air taken from ship dismantling areas in Aliaga.
Turkish Greenpeace representatives are in Ankara in protest that over 50 ships laden with toxic waste are sent every year by EU countries to Turkish and Asian coasts to be dismantled. Greenpeace Ship Dismounting Campaign Commissioner Erdem Vardar said that each year more then 50 ships are sent to Aliaga without any warnings. The EU started to transport one-wall oil tankers, Vardar explained, but in five years, more then 2,000 oil tankers will be sent to countries such as Turkey and India for dismantling. Following Vardar's statement, the Representative of the Turkish Delegation of the European Commission, Gurogar Sarigul, said the EU has begun research into the recycling of toxic materials, but that nothing has emerged yet. Sarigul said, "For the environmental pollution that has occurred so far, ship dismantling facilities in Aliaga and this area need to be managed more effectively from now on and the EU's financial investments in Turkey before the accession will be discussed." After Sarigul's statement, Greenpeace members gave the vials of toxic waste to officials at the EU Agency.
