Anthony Flew (1919- ) an English philosopher, posed a famous challenge to theology in the story of the gardener who is invisible, inaudible, etc. His "principle of falsifiability," which is closely related to the positivists' verifiability criterion, says that any statement with real content will, if true, make certain other statements false. Books by Flew include God and Philosophy and New Essays in Philosophical Theology.
