Aasian katastrofi on saanut liikkeelle rikollisia, jotka yrittävät huijata Internetin käyttäjiä huijaussivuillaan ja -viesteillään. Huijarit lähettävät epämääräisiä viestejä, joissa pyydetään lahjoittamaan rahaa useille henkilöille.
Verkkohuijareita vastaan taistelevan ryhmän jäsen Steve Streater havaitsi The Solid Foundation Humanitary Organisation, Asia -nimellä Yahoon ilmaisesta osoitteesta lähetetyn viestin, jonka alkuperä oli hänen mukaansa Nigeria.
Streaterin mukaan kyseessä näyttää olevan huijaus, sillä organisaatiosta ei löytynyt tietoja, ja Yahoo-osoite viittaa hänen mielestään huijaukseen.
Eräs viestin saanut postitti Streaterin mainitseman viestin nigerialaishuijauksia vastaan taistelevalle 419 Eater -sivustolle. Useita kirjoitusvirheitä sisältävässä viestissä pyydetään lähettämään rahaosoituksia useille henkilöille eri puolilla maailmaa.
Muun muassa YLEn verkkosivuilla on listattuna laillisisia hyväntekeväisyysjärjestöjä, jotka auttavat Aasian katastrofin uhreja.
