Five Ways the EU Constitution Would Harm Our Lives
The Constitution would increase the EU's powers over the nation states, in particular in areas of domestic policy. With this Constitution, the EU is on its way to becoming a country, and its nation states provinces in it. The main innovations are:
1) A legally binding Charter of Fundamental Rights. This would have a big impact on how existing EU law is applied, for instance in asylum and industrial relations, and could yet affect British national law.
2) The EU would gain new powers over criminal justice – the beginning of an EU criminal code endangering Britain's common law system.
3) There would be the beginnings of an EU equivalent to the FBI – a European Public Prosecutor and a body called Eurojust, which could investigate cross-border crimes and propose prosecutions.
4) The EU would gain a bigger role in foreign policy and defence. There would be an EU foreign minister, who in come circumstances could take over Britain's seat at the UN, and some EU foreign policy acts would be legally binding on Britain. There would be an EU defence planning cell – the kernel of an EU army and, since it would copy what NATO has already, a waste of scarce military resources.
5) The EU would looks like a country: it would have its own Constitution supreme over our own, a new legal status (a single legal personality) that would allow it to sign international treaties, its own President and Foreign Minister, a Charter of Fundamental Rights, EU citizenship and, for the countries that have it, its own currency.
