So, as promised, tonight was the night where William Dembski and Robert
Shapiro faced off at Columbia under the auspices of the Veritas Forum, an
umbrella organization of campus Christian groups. Our very own Matt

Next came an audience question and answer period. Matt Silberstein and I
both got to ask Dembski questions - I'll let him give his own account of his
question. I asked, relating to the Dover debacle and the DI's letter asking
the school board not to teach ID, whether Dembski thought ID should be
taught in schools; what should be taught, if so; and what's still missing,
if not.

After the presentation, Dembski mingled with the audience for a while, and I
caught up with him again. I said that I objected to his characterization of
evolutionary explanations for complex systems as non-existent, and he backed
off a bit, claiming that those explanations weren't "fully articulated",
though he didn't mention or acknowledge that it was at all deceptive to say
that they didn't exist during his talk. Someone else asked how ID could be
falsified, and he said that proposing a sufficient evolutionary explanation
for a given system would accomplish that; however, it seems that he wants
evolutionary explanations at the level of detail of what specific genes
mutated, down to individual nucleotides and the exact percentage of
selective advantage each such change conferred, before he'd accept such an
explanation (and even then he held out the possibility of a designer
secretly causing the mutations). I asked if he thought it was at all unfair
to demand this level of detail of evolution while himself offering nothing
better than "poof, ID happened". He said he didn't think so, because
evolution is a "theory of process", whereas ID isn't, and creative acts
can't be broken down into steps.

Dembski ei suoraan väitä niin, mutta varaa itselleen senkin mahiksen että Luoja mutaatioin vaikuttaisi evoluution kulkuun. "Informaatiosta" ei just tuossa puhuta mutta voimme tulkita..
