Miten rukoilla?

Mishnah: One should not rise to pray [the Shemoneh Esrei] other than with an
attitude of reverence...

The Gemara asks: From where [in Scripture] is this [law derived]?

Note: Perhaps it is sufficient to concentrate on the meaning of the words
one is saying. Where is indicated that one must also be in a reverent frame
of mind?

The Gemara answers: Rabbi Elazar said "For Scripture states 'And she was
bitter of spirit' [and she prayed to God]. (Samuel 1:10)

Note: This verse introduces Hannah's prayer that she be blessed with a
child. [Had the verse meant to give the reason for Hannah's prayer, the
explanation should have been given in the previous verse, which states: "And
Hannah arose after eating..." since that verse begins the description of
Hannah's prayer. From the fact that Hannah's bitter spirit is not mentioned
until verse 10, as an introduction to the statement "and she prayed to God"
we see that Scripture means to describe the way she approached her prayer,
not her reason for doing so. (Of course, bitterness and reverence are not
the same thing, and there is certainly no mitzvah [obligation] to be bitter
when praying. Nevertheless, we learn from Hannah not to approach prayer in a
gay or lighthearted mood).

The Gemara challenges this source: From where [do you know this]? Perhaps
Hannah is different, for she was exceptionally bitter at heart. [This does
not prove that others are obligated to pray in a similar fashion]

Note: Since she was exceptionally bitter of heart, her approach to prayer
was perhaps due to her extremely bitter circumstances and cannot be
generalized to others.

The Gemara offers an alternative source: Rather, Rabbi Yose, the son of
Rabbi Chanina said "[It is derived] from here. 'As for me, through Your
abundant kindness I will enter Your House, I will prostrate myself toward
Your holy Sanctuary in awe of You'." (Psalms 5:8) [Thus, we learn that
prayer must be approached with an attitude of awe...

[The Gemara then continues on to refute this as the source (for how we know
we must be reverent in prayer) and several more until it concludes:]

Gemara: Rather, Rav Nachman bar Yitzchak said "[It is derived] from here:
Serve God with awe and rejoice with trepidation." (Psalms 2:11)

Note: [This phrase actually refers to the Temple service] According to
Rashi, since prayer now takes the place of the Temple service, our prayers
must be conducted with a feeling of awe.

Vanhimmat

Siunausta Jeshuassa !
