HONG KONG -- As the SARS death toll mounts and scientists struggle to contain the global epidemic, new evidence has surfaced that the killer disease is the handiwork of depraved terrorist fiend Osama Bin Laden!
U.S. intelligence sources confirm the discovery of a detailed plan to create a "new designer virus" found on a laptop computer seized in the hideout of captured Al Qaeda No. 2 man Khalid Shaikh Mohammed earlier this year.
"The plan describes the virus as a genetically altered version of the coronavirus -- which researchers have now identified as the cause of SARS," reveals a CIA source.
"It also includes a set of chilling requirements set down in a memo from 'The Director' -- aka Osama Bin Laden. The specs say the disease must be easily communicable, have terrifying symptoms, kill slowly enough that victims have time to infect others and be 'impossible to cure.'"
Ground Zero for the influenza-like SARS appears to be China, where cases in Beijing alone are believed to number at least 200, according the World Health Organization (WHO). Intelligence sources say that's no coincidence.
"We now have proof that a team of six Al Qaeda operatives traveled to Hong Kong about three months before the first case of the epidemic was diagnosed," says the CIA source.
