On Tuesday evening, the Norwegian ambassador in Moscow handed over an official protest to Russian authorities. Earlier on the same day, a major Russian Navy exercise in the North Sea had forced Norwegian oil companies to halt helicopter traffic to and from oil platforms in the area.
Ambassador Øyvind Nordsletten presented the protest in a meeting with the Russian Foreign Ministry. He then said that the Russian exercise is not against international law, but still highly regrettable since it has consequences for the Norwegian oil industry’s operations in the North Sea.
-We expect that the military training can be made in a way which do not interfere with Norwegian non-military activities on the shelf, press spokeswoman for the Norwegian Foreign Ministry, Anne Lene Dale Sandsten says to Aftenposten.
Yesterday’s Russian exercise involved the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov as well as several other Northern Fleet vessels. Almost 50 aircrafts were also engaged in the training.
The training forced Norwegian air traffic authorities to halt Norwegian helicopter traffic in the area, which subsequently interfered with the oil industry’s offshore activities.
Press spokesman for the Norwegian Armed Forces, John Inge Øglænd, says the Russian training was closely monitored by Norwegian coast guard vessels. The operation is not over, but Mr. John Inge Øglænd still says Norway will continue to monitor the situation.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday this week hailed the successful test launch of two new nuclear missiles as “holiday fireworks”.
On Tuesday, a submarine in the Barents Sea fired a Sineva RSM-54 missile at a test site in the far east. A few hours later, an RS-24 ballistic missile was launched from the northern Plesetsk cosmodrome.
A relaxed and smiling Putin called the successful missile tests "pleasant and spectacular holiday fireworks", in televised remarks with Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov, Reuters reports

Onko Karjala silloin valmis?
