A group of UEFA officials have started an official investigation regarding the 1st-division league in Sweden, the Superettan, after inspecting numerous suspicious match tapes and footage.
"Certain bookmakers have reported unusual betting patterns compared to normal season games, which triggered the investigation", says Peter Gilliéron, of UEFA's Stadium and Security Committee.
According to the committee, more than 50x of average betting volume has been placed especially on nordic bookmakers between 28th of June 2008 - 1st July 2008, nearly all of the bets being placed on the underdog teams of the Superettan league.
"We are certainly not ruling out the possibility of inside information or fixed matches, because the results of these past games are a very abnormal deviation from usual results", Gilliéron explains.
European football has been plagued since the 2006 Italian football scandal which involved match fixing in Italy's top professional football leagues, Serie A and Serie B.
The last scandal was uncovered in May 2006 by Italian police, implicating league champions Juventus, and other major teams including A.C. Milan, Fiorentina, Lazio, and Reggina when a number of telephone interceptions showed a thick network of relations between team managers and referee organisations.
