News in brief - Tues 23rd Sept
A review of the news from around the grounds of each Barclays Premier League club.
Arsenal
Arsenal Barclays Premier League leaders Arsenal look set to field a young side for the Carling Cup tie with Sheffield United. Wales Under-21 midfielder Aaron Ramsey, 16-year-old Jack Wilshere, reserve team captain Gavin Hoyte, Kieran Gibbs and first-year scholar Emmanuel Frimpong are all in contention to face the Blades. Alex Song and goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski will provide the experience, along with Danish striker Nicklas Bendtner, Mexican Carlos Vela and Johan Djourou who has signed a new long-term contract at the club.
Aston Villa
Aston Villa Goalkeeper David Bevan has joined Tamworth on a month's loan. The 19-year-old Republic of Ireland youngster has found his reserve chances limited with Stuart Taylor, Brad Guzan and Elliot Parish ahead of him in the pecking order.
Blackburn Rovers
Blackburn Rovers Striker Matt Derbyshire has told manager Paul Ince he is ready to play a more central role at Blackburn Rovers. The 22-year-old has had to make do with a place on the bench in the Barclays Premier League so far this season but opened his account with the winner against Fulham on Saturday. He said: "I am always ready to start but it is up to the manager to decide whether I am ready. It is down to the manager to pick me to play and down to me to perform. If he does, then I know I will perform, it is as simple as that. I will just keep biding my time. Hopefully I start a few more games than I did last season."
Bolton Wanderers
Bolton Wanderers Manager Gary Megson has challenged his side to build on their second-half display against Arsenal on Saturday. The Trotters were beaten 3-1 by Arsene Wenger's Barclays Premier League leaders at the Reebok Stadium but gave a good account of themselves. And Megson is confident they will rise up the table from their current position of 16th if they display the same energy and spirit, starting with Saturday's visit to Manchester United. He said: "We have to pick up where we left off in that second half. If we get at it in the same manner against every other team, they haven't all got the same quality Arsenal have got."
Chelsea
Chelsea Salomon Kalou is hoping his point-saving goal against Manchester United will be the first of many against Sir Alex Ferguson's side. He said: "It's my first goal against Manchester [United], so I hope it is the start of a lot of goals and it has given me a lot of confidence. It is a good feeling to come off the bench and score because it is one of my important goals. When you play against Manchester and they are winning 1-0, you have to make the difference in the last few minutes. If you watch the game, then it is not a bad result, they could have even won the game, so to come back into the game is a good result."
Everton
Everton Leon Osman believes Everton's second-half performance at Hull City can be the catalyst to kick-start an up and down start to the season. The Toffees came from two goals behind to draw 2-2 at the KC Stadium, Osman netting the equaliser after fellow midfielder Tim Cahill had halved the deficit. But the 27-year-old conceded the Blues only had themselves to blame after falling behind to two set pieces - a problem which has plagued them so far this campaign. We knew it wouldn't be easy to go to Hull and get a result," said Osman. "It was difficult and they got the crowd behind them early on. They got up and running and scored two goals but, yet again, we are disappointed at the way we conceded them. But we showed a lot of character to get back into it as we did and in the end, we deserved the point. We possibly could have won it. When you come back from 2-0 down, it is a great feeling - sometimes it's as if you have won the match."
Fulham
Fulham Manager Roy Hodgson must decide whether to rotate his squad for the Carling Cup match at Burnley. Midfielder Leon Andreasen has recovered from a groin strain and is ready to return after being an unused substitute against Blackburn Rovers at the weekend. Dickson Etuhu could make his debut and Andrew Johnson may be given another chance to score his first Fulham goal.
Hull City
Hull City Michael Turner admits Hull City spent the final ten minutes of their match against Everton hanging on to a point. Turner had helped his side to establish a 2-0 lead but quick-fire goals from Tim Cahill and Leon Osman left the visitors looking the more likely to bag all three points at the KC Stadium. He said: "Once they got one, it was always going to be backs to the wall stuff. Towards the end, we were even hanging in there for the point. 2-0 is always quite a fragile lead but we've got to learn from the game and move on to next week now."
Liverpool
Liverpool Manager Rafael Benitez will hand Brazilian goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri a debut in the Reds' Carling Cup match with Crewe Alexandra. The 25-year-old joined the Reds in the summer from Palmeiras and will replace Jose Reina - who has played every minute of the campaign so far - for the third-round tie at Anfield. Benitez has no fresh injury worries ahead of the match, with only Fabio Aurelio ruled out as he continues to recover from a calf problem. The Liverpool boss is likely to rest striker Fernando Torres and captain Steven Gerrard and will give some of the club's promising youngsters a chance to impress.
Manchester City
Manchester City Richard Dunne had the perfect birthday as City beat Portsmouth 6-0 at the City of Manchester Stadium. The skipper, who turned 29, celebrated his special day with a rare goal and said: "Everyone was just brilliant. The whole performance from start to finish was great and it was a really enjoyable game to be involved in. It was a strange game because every time the ball came up we'd clear it and just sit back and watch. It was fantastic to be part of it."
Manchester United
Manchester United Angola striker Manucho is in line to make his Manchester United debut in their Carling Cup tie with Middlesbrough at Old Trafford. The African spent the latter half of last season on loan in Greece with Panathinaikos but has now received his work permit and recovered from a broken metatarsal, so should start against Gareth Southgate's men. Anderson and Nani are also expected to be in Sir Alex Ferguson's 20-man squad, while Gary Neville should also get some more match practice, with Cristiano Ronaldo once again expected to be on the bench as he continues to search for top form after his recent ankle operation.
Middlesbrough
Middlesbrough Gareth Southgate is refusing to be lulled into a false sense of security - even if Manchester United rotate their squad for the Carling Cup tie at Old Trafford. The Boro' boss lists the non-starters at Chelsea as evidence of the Red Devils' incredible strength in depth. He said: "When I looked at their squad it was Nani, Giggs, Ronaldo, Tevez, O'Shea, Vidic [who did not start], so it still looks decent to me. You've got to be conscious of their quality. I wouldn't imagine too many of the side that played at Chelsea will play against us but by my reckoning that still left them with about 10 internationals when I was writing a possible team down. I think they will be strong, there will be players Sir Alex will want to give a game to and he'll want to beat us so we've got to be prepared to face what could well be a star-studded line-up."
Newcastle United
Newcastle United Owner Mike Ashley has appointed investment bank Seymour Pierce to handle the sale of the club. The London-based bank has been drafted in as the billionaire attempts to offload the business following demonstrations by fans in the wake of manager Kevin Keegan's departure earlier this month. A club statement said: "The board of Newcastle United can confirm it has appointed the London-based investment bank Seymour Pierce to act on the potential sale of the club. All matters relating to the sale of the club, including inquiries from interested parties, should go through Seymour Pierce. The club will be making no further comment at this time."
Portsmouth
Portsmouth Sylvain Distin believes it is imperative that Portsmouth bounce back quickly from their 6-0 defeat at Manchester City. The central defender endured a miserable return to his former club but said: "To lose 6-0 - ridiculous is the word. I just can't explain it. All I can say is we were poor. We have to make sure we correct things in our next game. It's part of our jobs to do that."
Stoke City
Stoke City Manager Tony Pulis will revert to his 'B' squad when Stoke City attempt to reach the fourth round of the Carling Cup for the first time in seven years at home to Reading. The Potteries side have an awful record in the competition, suffering ignominious defeats at the hands of Rochdale, Darlington, Mansfield Town, Oldham Athletic (twice) and Bury in recent seasons. Pulis said: "We've now got a lot of players at the football club and many of them are in desperate need of a game. I'm sure they will also be desperate to show they still have an important part to play here. We must also remember this match comes between playing Liverpool last weekend and taking on Chelsea this coming Saturday. The players were magnificent at Liverpool and we had a lot of tired bodies and minds in the dressing room afterwards. But we do want to make further progress in the Carling Cup and I will put out a side which will be very competitive against Reading."
Sunderland
Sunderland Roy Keane admits he is desperate to improve on his poor cup record since going into management. The Sunderland boss oversaw his first cup victory when the Black Cats won 2-1 at Nottingham Forest in the second round of the Carling Cup. Keane is now hoping to take Sunderland to the later stages of one competition he failed to win during his illustrious playing career. League One Northampton Town, managed by former Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Stuart Gray, stand in Keane's way as they go to the Stadium of Light having caused one of the shocks of the second round by beating Bolton Wanderers 2-1. Keane did not get his managerial cup record off to the best of starts with three straight defeats, including last season's Carling Cup defeat at Luton Town which particularly bugs him. He said: "The defeat at Luton last season still sticks in my throat, it was a huge disappointment, as well as losing to Wigan in the FA Cup. There needs to be an improvement. We want to win as many games as possible. There's always a nice reaction when you win a game of football but we have to be focused and concentrate only on Northampton, give them the respect they deserve."
Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur Vedran Corluka believes a bit of luck and a win is all it will take to turn around Tottenham Hotspur's season. In the wake of the 0-0 draw at home to Wigan Athletic, he said: "Everyone expected the win but unfortunately we only took a point. We worked hard and I thought we were unlucky, but if we keep doing that the results will come. The team is too good to be bottom of the league. The confidence isn't the highest at the moment, but I'm sure once we get wins under our belt, things will change. But we have no time to wait for something to happen. We need a win another win as soon as possible in whatever way we can get it. It doesn't matter what competition we win in, so we will be giving 100 per cent against Newcastle in the Carling Cup on Wednesday."
West Bromwich Albion
West Bromwich Albion Manager Tony Mowbray is sweating on the fitness of centre-back Abdoulaye Meite who suffered a recurrence of a calf problem suring the warm-up before the home match against Aston Villa. Mowbray said: "Meite has been recovering from a calf injury he picked up at Bolton but trained all week without any problems. But it gave way on him again in the warm-up and we had to change things at ten-to-12."
West Ham United
West Ham United West Ham United will rest Carlton Cole for the Carling Cup tie at Watford as the striker has a slight foot injury. Dean Ashton (ankle) is still sidelined, along with fellow forward Craig Bellamy (hamstring/groin), so youngster Freddie Sears could be handed the chance to impress. Defenders Danny Gabbidon (groin) and Jonathan Spector (thigh) remain sidelined, while midfielder Kieron Dyer continues his rehabilitation after a broken leg.
Wigan Athletic
Wigan Athletic Wigan Athletic's home match against Stoke City on 8th November has now been moved to a 12.45pm kick off on police advice.
