Understanding between finns?

This is a real story today: A foreigner student took a saturday train from Helsinki to Espoo. She has the "kausilippu" inside Helsinki so she pressed the number 2 on the machine to pay the additional fee for Espoo. When train was in Espoo, there were some ticket checkers coming and a checker, a bold-head 30-something man checked her ticket card using a hand-held machine. Everything was fine. The man politely returned the ticket card and said "ole hyvä". Then the bold-head man turn to a Finnish man sitting on the opposite side to check his ticket card. There was a few seconds silence. Then the checker suddenly turned his back towards the foreign student girl again, saying something in Finnish. The student, without the knowlege of Finnish, asked him to speak English. The checker said: you did not pay ticket. She said: I paid. The checker showed his machine and said: the machine showed that your card has no money in it. The student, puzzled, without understanding that the information showed on cheker's machine was actually from the card of the Finnish man sitting on the opposite, said to the checker: I just paid the money on the machine on this train. That machine showed that I have money. Both the checker and the student came to the machine of the train. When the card was showed. The green light was on. It indicated that the money was paid. It also showed there was few euros sum still in the card. However the checker did not admit he made a mistake (a "mistake"?). Instead he insisted that the student did not pay the money and threatened to fine 50 euros. The student was completely confused and just said I have paid it and the light was green what justified you for a fine? The checker hesitated. Then he changed his mind and said: OK this time I don't give you a 50 euros fine, but you must press the number 2 and pay it again. The train was approaching Kilo where the student must leave. She did not want to get messed with this checker any longer so she paid the second payment and left the train. When she later told the story to us, she realized that the zero sum showed on checker's hand-held machine was not from her card. And the strange behavior of the checker was completely out of her understanding.

Anyway we decided to go to yhteispalvelupiste next Monday to get a complete record print-out, and report the whole event to YTV. We want to see the justice in Finland and hoping Finland is not Eastern Europe where the power is widely abused.

Have a nice ystäväpäivä for all friendly people.
