France to clamp down on anti-Semitism
Associated Press Jun. 9, 2004
..."Anti-Semitism isn't an opinion," said Cukierman. "It's an extremely grave crime that concerns the values of France."...
With 180 acts of anti-Semitism recorded in France since the start of the year, Justice Minister Dominique Perben said Tuesday that authorities would respond with increased firmness.
In only 35 of the 180 anti-Semitic acts recorded was the perpetrator identified, the Justice Minister said.
Perben promised an "even firmer and more dissuasive judicial response" and said he would like to see special judges put in place in each court to deal with matters of an anti-Semitic nature. However, it was not clear whether action would be immediately taken to create such a system.
Perben spoke after a meeting with Roger Cukierman, president of the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions of France, an umbrella group, to reassure the Jewish community of France's solidarity.
Of the 180 anti-Semitic acts recorded since January 1, 46 concern attacks on people while 104 involve attacks on property, the ministry said. The remaining 30 acts involved the press.
No comparable figure for the same period the year before was immediately available. However, France has acknowledged that anti-Semitic attacks are on the rise.
"Anti-Semitism isn't an opinion," said Cukierman. "It's an extremely grave crime that concerns the values of France."
Both men agreed that the education of youth was a vital element in reducing anti-Semitism.
The French government, moving to stem rising anti-Semitism, announced a new policy in December that includes encouraging class trips to Auschwitz and "exemplary sanctions" for anyone found guilty of an anti-Semitic act.
The meeting of Perben and Cukierman follows the stabbing of a Jewish teenager on Friday outside a yeshiva in suburban Epinay-sur-Seine. The attack was one in a series of six attacks in the area. However, the others did not involve Jews.
Police have been questioning a suspect since Tuesday.
