The Council for Evidence-based Psychiatry (cepuk.org) has been invited to contribute evidence to a project at the BMA (British Medical Association) which will review the issues associated with dependence upon prescribed drugs, including benzodiazepines, sleeping pills, pain relievers and antidepressants.
If you or a family member has experienced negative effects with one or more of these drugs, or has had difficulties withdrawing or following withdrawal, then you are invited to submit your experiences to CEP. We will then collate these and include a summary and/or individual responses in our submission to the BMA.
You may submit anonymously; if you do supply your name we will not use it as part of our contribution to the BMA. However please supply your country of residence and email in case we want to get in touch with you. We cannot guarantee to include all of the submissions made to us.
Note that you do not have to reside in the UK in order to contribute.
We would also like to be able to use your responses anonymously in other areas of CEP’s work and research; please let us know if you are happy for us to do this.
This is an important opportunity to contribute to a prestigious review of the problems associated with these drugs and we are very grateful for your input.

The Council for Evidence-based Psychiatry (CEP) has been invited to contribute evidence to a review conducted by the British Medical Association (BMA), which will assess the issues associated with dependence upon prescribed drugs, including benzodiazepines, sleeping pills, pain relievers and antidepressants.
As part of our contribution, CEP has set up an online survey (see below) to gather experiences from individuals who have suffered negative effects while taking or withdrawing from benzodiazepines, sleeping pills, pain relievers and antidepressants.
The BMA is the professional association and registered trade union for doctors in the United Kingdom, with over 151,000 members. This review is being undertaken by BMA’s Board of Science whose aim is promote medical sciences, contribute to the development of public health policy, and to support medical research. In recent years the Board of Science has conducted reviews and published reports on a number of important health topics, including a recent investigation into the most effective approaches for reducing the harms associated with illicit drugs of dependence.
In January 2013 the Board of Science held a half-day seminar on the topic of addiction to prescribed medicine, which was attended by senior health leaders as well as patient representatives. Professor Heather Ashton, the leading benzodiazepine expert, gave a forthright talk on the ongoing harms and problems associated with this class of drug. Baylissa Frederick, from the withdrawal support charity Recovery Road, spoke of her own devastating experience withdrawing from clonazepam, and described her work supporting others who are going through this difficult process.
Following the seminar the Board of Science decided to undertake a project with the aim of creating an improved policy framework for the prevention, identification and management of involuntary dependence to prescription medication. CEP has been invited to contribute evidence alongside other key stakeholder organisations.
If you or a family member has experienced such effects then you are invited to submit your experience to CEP. We will then collate these and include a summary and/or individual responses in our submission to the BMA. You do not need to reside in the UK to contribute.
