"The route of infection of the poliovirus was believed to be via the nose due to experiments on monkeys. Flexner and Lewis claimed this in 1910. By 1915 more animal experiments had been done and any belief that there was another route of infection had been eliminated.

It was not until 1938 that this theory was challenged, and the ‘oral-alimentary tract’ theory was proposed - that the virus infected via the mouth and eventually through the intestines. Dr Paul wrote in ‘The History of Poliomyelitis’ “The clock had been set back about twenty five years in poliomyelitis research.”

Dr Sabin, who developed the polio vaccine stated on oath to the American congress that the polio vaccine would have been available 40 years earlier if animal experiments had not been performed."
