The success of Lotus's eagerly anticipated M250 sports car could all hinge on Italian maker Alfa Romeo. Unhappy with the performance of the Renault 3.0-litre V6 previously earmarked for the M250, Lotus is evaluating Alfa's 3.0 V6, featured in the GTV coupé and 166 flagship.
With the French motor unable to hit the 250bhp benchmark hence the car's name the tuneful Alfa unit has been called into action, with insiders claiming it is up to the task. It develops 220bhp in standard tune, and specialists claim it will be reliable at 250bhp-plus. Lotus's Hethel HQ in Norfolk is conducting viability tests, but as yet there is no official word as to whether the deal has been done.
So far Alfa Romeo has made no comment, but sources tell us that the move could be part of a bigger picture which sees the firm supply its acclaimed four-cylinder Twin Spark engines to the Elise family.
