Around 1520, Luther had discovered the 'true' identity of the 'Antichrist and his damnation', namely, Papal Rome as the end-time fulfillment of Biblical prophecy. On February 24, 1520, Luther wrote a letter to a friend Spalatin stating (Luther, Schriften, vol. 21a, col. 234; translated in Waddington's 'History of the Reformation', vol. 1)
"I am practically cornered, and can hardly doubt any more, that the POPE IS REALLY THE ANTICHRIST, whom the world expects according to a general belief, because everything so excactly corresponds to the way of life, action, words, and commandments."
"The question now is not, whether there is any Pope: if that be the question, that first part of subject inquiry is already answered and done with. We have, moreover, answered this question, 'What is the Pope?' We have concluded that 'The Pope is ANTICHRIST.' Out of this, therefore, flows a remaining and last subject of enquiry…….. For the flame of my spirit having entered upon this third part, under (I believe) divine direction, has set fire to all the
ordinances of the Pope, that very holy Father in
Christ, that vice-god upon earth, and burnt them
up as being the dogmas of ANTICHRIST……

joka Teoksessaan Schem Hamphoras (1543)uhosi, että taistelussa "perkeleen lapsia" vastaan olisivat kaikki keinot sallittuja. Samaa periaatetta hän käytti kristinuskon hölynpölyn levittämisessä, siis kaikki keinot olivat sallittuja; valehtelu ja asioiden vääristely. SIIS AIVAN SAMOIN KUIN APOSTOLI PAAVALI!
Lutherin todellinen luonne ei vastaa sitä kuvaa, minkä uskovaiset tahot ovat hänestä antaneet. Samanlainen totuuden vääristymä on tapahtunut myös UT:n kirjoituksissa. Ne eivät kerro mitä Juudeassa tuolloin todellisuudessa tapahtui, vaan sen mitä ihmisten taikauskoinen mieli kuvitteli tapahtuneen.
Lutherilla riitti todellakin taikauskoa myös antikristuksen metsästykseen. Elämänsä lopulla Luther uskoi komeettojen taivaallisiin ominaisuuksiin ja oli täysin varma paavin saatanallisesta olemuksesta koska kirjoitti (johon myös viittaat): “en kuitenkaan silti oivaltanut sitä, mikä on tästä johdonmukaisena seurauksena, nimittäin että paavi on ehdottomasti saatanasta. Sillä se mikä ei ole Jumalasta, on ehdottomasti saatanasta“ (Lutherin esipuhe latinan kielisten teostensa julkaisuun Valitut teokset 11,7).
Kirjeessään Spalatinukselle Luther sanoo vuonna 1520: “Tiedän jo olevani paljon vapaampi päästyäni vihdoinkin varmuuteen siitä, että paavi on Antikristus“. Tämän vakaumuksensa Luther toistaa aivan samanlaisena Schmalkaldenin artikloissa: “Tämä opinkohta osoittaa vakavasti, että paavi on varsinainen Antikristus, joka on asettanut ja korottanut itsensä Kristuksen yläpuolelle ja häntä vastaan“. Schmalkaldenin artikloiden mukaan lunastuksen uskonkohta on pääopinkohta.
Paaviudesta Luther sanoo, että paavi “on voimiensa mukaan turmellut koko pyhää kristillistä kirkkoa ja tehnyt tyhjäksi ensimmäistä eli pääopinkohtaa, joka puhuu Jeesuksen Kristuksen suorittamasta lunastuksesta“ Vanhurskauttamisoppi ja paavius ovat sovittamattomassa ristiriidassa keskenään.
Lutherin taikausko elää edelleen perintönä nykyajan uskovaisissa: monet luterilaiset uskokovat numeromagiaan (gematriaan) - mm. siihen, että sanojen “vicarius Filii Dei’ (Jumalan Pojan sijainen) lukuarvo on 666 eli Antikristuksen luku.
