"Russia's actions in Georgia are designed to stop it moving closer to NATO but also to bring about the collapse of the Saakashvili government," CEPS analyst Nicu Popescu - who has travelled extensively in South Caucasus - told EUobserver.
He explained that Russia's economic blockade and gas price hikes are fast pushing the country's economy into a "very serious" dependency on external aid, with EU long-term nation building under the Action Plan out-of-pace with events on the ground.
"The EU is playing a long-term game in Georgia but the Russians are playing short-term," he said. "The problem is that two to three years from now there may be no independent Georgia for the EU to talk to any more."
