  • makroevoluutiota?

"The 12 have been growing ever since, gradually accumulating mutations and evolving for more than 44,000 generations, while Lenski watches what happens.

Profound change
Mostly, the patterns Lenski saw were similar in each separate population. All 12 evolved larger cells, for example, as well as faster growth rates on the glucose they were fed, and lower peak population densities.

But sometime around the 31,500th generation, something dramatic happened in just one of the populations – the bacteria suddenly acquired the ability to metabolise citrate, a second nutrient in their culture medium that E. coli normally cannot use.

Indeed, the inability to use citrate is one of the traits by which bacteriologists distinguish E. coli from other species. The citrate-using mutants increased in population size and diversity.

"It's the most profound change we have seen during the experiment. This was clearly something quite different for them, and it's outside what was normally considered the bounds of E. coli as a species, which makes it especially interesting," says Lenski."

Ja varsinkin tähän vääristelyyn tuosta uutisesta:

"I want to focus on the statement in the subject line of my article here - how this is the first time evovution has been caught in the act.

So if this is the first time, what was all the so-called overwhelming evidenceof evolution prior to the year 2008? The theory of evolution is being marketed like toothpaste. Now we have a new and improved product in that for the first time we really do have evidence of it.
....
Well folks, DO think about it. And do not never mind how trivial the new evidence really is. This is a grand admission that the neo-Darwinian theory of evolution is 19th century junk science that was never supported by anything more than wishful thinking that science had provided an answer to one of natures deepest mysteries - the origin and diversification of life.
(Dave Scot, New Scientist, 19 June 2008)"

joka paljastuu vääristelyksi täällä:

http://scienceavenger.blogspot.com/2008/06/davescot-sets-new-low-for-quotemining.html

""It's the first time evolution has been caught in the act of making such a rare and complex new trait."

Seems clear enough, doesn't it? Generically, it says "It's the first time Process A has been caught in the act of making Result B", and indeed, that is exactly what it was. That says nothing about what other results Process A might have previously been caught in the act of producing. This is the sort of thing you learn in 5th-grade sentence structure. Apparently Davescot missed that day, because the title of his article, and the way he represents the quote in his criticism of it, is:

"the first time evolution has been caught in the act”

He then goes on to pretend that the qualifier of "making such a rare and complex new trait" wasn't said, which completely changes the meaning of the statement. It is the equivalent of taking the statement "I've never seen LeBron James play basketball so well" and leaving off the "so well". Yet he quotes the paragraph in full right before he quotemines it! There are no words to describe this. What does one do with a child who lies with the proof in plain sight?"

http://www.talkorigins.org/indexcc/CB/CB101_2.html

"Documentation of mutations producing new features includes the following:
the ability of a bacterium to digest nylon (Negoro et al. 1994; Thomas n.d.; Thwaites 1985);
adaptation in yeast to a low-phosphate environment (Francis and Hansche 1972; 1973; Hansche 1975);
the ability of E. coli to hydrolyze galactosylarabinose (Hall 1981; Hall and Zuzel 1980);
evolution of multicellularity in a unicellular green alga (Boraas 1983; Boraas et al. 1998);
modification of E. coli's fucose pathway to metabolize propanediol (Lin and Wu 1984);
evolution in Klebsiella bacteria of a new metabolic pathway for metabolizing 5-carbon sugars (Hartley 1984);"
