"At 4:00 P.M. the guard at the jail was changed. Frank Worrell, who had threatened Joseph Smith earlier that morning, was then in charge. A few minutes after five, a mob of about one hundred men with blackened faces arrived in town and headed for the jail. The prisoners heard a scuffle downstairs followed by a shout for surrender and three or four shots. The Prophet and the others rushed to the door to fight off the assailants who had ascended the stairs and poked their guns through the half-closed door. John Taylor and Willard Richards attempted to deflect the muskets with their canes. A bullet fired through the panel of the door struck Hyrum in the left side of his face, and he fell, saying, “I am a dead man!” Joseph, leaning over Hyrum exclaimed, “Oh dear, brother Hyrum!” John Taylor said the look of sorrow he saw on Joseph’s face was forever imprinted on his mind. Joseph then stepped to the door, reached around the door casing, and discharged his six-shooter into the crowded hall. Only three of the six chambers fired, wounding three assailants."

The shots delayed the assassins only a moment. John Taylor attempted to jump out of the window, but was hit by gunfire. A shot through the window from below hit the watch in his vest pocket, stopping it at 5:16 and knocking him back into the room. He fell to the floor and was shot again in his left wrist and below his left knee. Rolling to get under the bed, he was hit again from the stairway, the bullet tearing away his flesh at the left hip. His blood was splattered on the floor and the wall. “Joseph, seeing there was no safety in the room,” tried the same escape. Instantly the mob fired on him, and he fell mortally wounded through the open window exclaiming, “Oh Lord, my God!” The mob on the stairs rushed outside to assure themselves that Joseph Smith was dead."

1816 4 2 = 1822

Ja edelleen linkittämässäsi artikkelissa jää kokonaan huomiotta Lucyn syntymävuosi 1821 eli FAIR pyrkii tässäkin kohtaa sivuuttamaan itsensä kannalta epämieluisan ja selittämättömän yksityiskohdan Joseph Smithin kirjoituksessa.

  • Lavina Fielding Anderson on toimittanut teoksen "Lucy's Book A Critical Edition of Lucy Mack Smith's Family Memoir" (© 2001 by Signature Books Publishing, LLC.) jossa vertaillaan Lucyn muistelmien eri versioita.

"More complex are such editorial changes as the addition of the first vision narrative from the Times and Seasons, a topic which Lucy does not include in her rough draft at all, and an energetic reworking of the story of how Joseph received the gold plates from the angel—whom Lucy identifies as Nephi—to which have been added numerous details and expansions."
Eli Lucy itse ei maininnut muistelmissaan laisinkaan Ensimmäistä Näkyä (myöhempiin painoksiin se lisättiin Times and Season lehdessä julkaistun "virallisen" version mukaisena.)

Tällainen mielenkiintoinen alaviite Fielding Andersonin kirjasta osui silmiini liittyen täällä keskusteltuun asiaan siitä minä vuonna Ensimmäinen Näky tapahtui:
"The Presbyterian minister, Benjamin Stockton, had hosted the successful revival of 1824-25, but Joseph Sr. held a grudge against Stockton for implying, during Alvin’s funeral sermon, that the boy “had gone to hell, for Alvin was not a church member.” Therefore, when Stockton suggested that the harvest of converts from the revival should become Presbyterians, the Smith family was in conflict. The next night, George Lane, a Methodist, preached on “What church shall I join?” According to William, “The burden of his discourse was to ask God, using as a text, ‘If any man lack wisdom let him ask of God who giveth to all men liberally [James 1:5].’ And of course when Joseph went home and was looking over the text he was impressed to do just what the preacher had said, and going out into the woods with child-like, simple trusting faith believing that God meant just what he said, he kneeled down and prayed; and … God was pleased to show him that he should join none of those churches but if faithful he should be chosen to establish the true church”

William here stated that Hyrum, Samuel, Katherine, and his mother, Lucy, became members of the Presbyterian church, but that his father would not join because of some feelings engendered at Alvin's funeral. Thus, by implication, these family members joined near the time of Alvin's death. Lucy Smith, in her account, indicated that she and several of her family became interested in joining with a church shortly after Alvin's death. This would indicate that they probably joined the Presbyterian church early in 1824.[33] Note that William said that it was "the next evening" when Reverend Lane preached his sermon, after which Joseph went home and looked over the text. This would fit well with the visitation of the angel Moroni, in the chamber in the late evening, but not quite so well with going into the woods the next morning to pray. This is another implication that William mentally confused the two experiences. William also stated that it was Rev. Stockton who had intimated at Alvin's funeral sermon that Alvin had gone to hell. Alvin died November 23, 1823,[34] and although Rev. Stockton's name began appearing in the Wayne Sentinel in December of 1823, he was not installed in his ministry in Palmyra until February 18, 1824.[35] When William stated that Rev. Stockton was the president of the revival meeting, and that Rev. Lane preached a sermon on "what church shall I join," he was almost certainly speaking of a meeting held during the 1823 revival just prior to the visitation of the angel Moroni, not of the 1819-1820 revival prior to Joseph's First Vision. William said that it was Rev. Lane who called Joseph Smith's attention to James 1:4-5 which attracted him into the sacred grove to test its statement that God will give liberally to those who seek in faith. William was probably wrong in that too. In Joseph's accounts, he relates that "I opened the Testament promiscuously on these words in James ...";[36] "I was one day reading the epistle of James ..."[37] and "... opened his Bible & the first Passage that struck him was ..."[38] Joseph nowhere intimates that he was directed toward the verse in James through hearing a sermon. Oliver Cowdery also mentioned Rev. Lane in his account, but as shown above, it was only in the sense of a great and successful revivalist in the Palmyra vicinity in 1823.

Tämän Elden Watsonin kirjoittelun jossa hän väittää että William Smith on erehtynyt päivämääristä tekee yksi seikka oudoksi:
"On the morning of September 22, 1823, after being so directed by the angel, Joseph Smith called his family together and related to them his vision and experiences of the previous evening with Moroni, an angel sent to him from God. Twelve year old William Smith was there with the rest of his family as Joseph explained the events of Moroni's visit of the evening of September 21, 1823. It appears that prior to this time Joseph had not related to his family his initial visionary experience of some three and one half years earlier in which he saw both God the Father, and Jesus Christ. "

"Indicating the angel had told Joseph of the plates prior to the revival,
Lucy added that for a long time after Alvin's death the family could not
bear any talk about the golden plates, for the subject had been of great
interest to him, and any reference to the plates stirred sorrowful memories.
She said she attended the revival with hope of gaining solace for
Alvin's loss. Such detail gives validity to Lucy's chronology. She would
not have been likely to make up such a reaction for herself or the family, nor mistake the time when it happened. I am persuaded Lucy joined the Presbyterians in 1824."
