Linda Genborg 2011-04-20

The fires in Västra Frölunda continued last night. The police and emergency services met for an extra meeting at Frölunda Police station on Tuesday evening with regards to the fires on Monday night. But the meeting had hardly finished before the unrest started again.

Three cars were set on fire at around 22:45 on Grevegårdsvägen. And more alarms followed. A man was hit by a sharp object in the leg and was taken to hospital with minor injuries. Litter bins and some type of rockets were set on fire at Vättnedalsskolan. The police were illuminated with green lasers at several locations including Opaltorget. A pile of boards were set on fire close to a preschool on Smaragdgatan. And stones were thrown against a tram on its way to Frölunda Torg.

According to residents in the area, the police and emergency services did not respond to the fires on Grevegårdsvägen for quite a while. A witness also said that the youths who started the fires were still in the area:

- These youths don't seem to be scared off by anything.

The fires were put out around 1:00. On Wednesday morning, the police announced that two young people have been arrested for aggravated vandalism.

As in Backa, the unrest is believed to have been sparked by a police intervention.

- Police officers were illuminated with green lasers and several youths were searched. Afterwards, there was a sour atmosphere, said Mats Palmgren, deputy police chief for the Gothenburg region.
