For most host families, it is important that the au pair assists them with taking care of their children and with household chores while they are at work. According to the basic principle of au pairing, an au pair supports a host family with the daily duties at home. Host families prefer responsible au pairs. As they are leaving in their hands their most precious treasure, namely their kids.
The most important skills you need to be equipped with are:
experience in childcare
sense of responsibility
flexibility
readiness to integrate in a family with new customs and habits
good basic knowledge of the host country's language and the will to enhance it
As an au pair, you naturally have rights and standards that define the duties you may and should accomplish and which on the other hand are not part of the au pair job. accompanying them to the nursery/school or to specific activities
cleaning the house and keeping it tidy
watching the house
taking care of the pets
