Metallica

Lets summarise Metallica -

Kill 'Em All - A Thrash classic that helped establish that particular genre in America. Along with 'Show No Mercy', 'Killing Is My Business', 'Bonded by Blood' and 'The Legacy' this album is probably amongst the best of that period of time when the Bay Area scene was still virgin stamping ground.

Ride The Lightning - Arguably Metallica's best album. Violent lyrics, merciless guitar riffs, brilliant solos on both guitar and bass, angry drum riffs and focus. This album is classic.

Master of Puppets - Awesome, the only thing that compares to this is Slayer's 'Reign in Blood' (which in turn is the greatest Thrash album of all time).

...And Justice For All - You can tell that Metallica are losing their focus on this one. The whipping boy was Jason Newsted and it's a shame the bass was never produced in the best way possible. The drums were over-produced and there were too many radio-friendly songs that lacked the intensity of the first 3 albums.

Metallica - Their downfall starts here. Hiring Bob Rock (the main man behind bands such as Motley Crue, Ratt and Poison) to be the producer of the record, making endless boring songs that could just as easily fit onto any low-ranking Black Sabbath record, and deciding to over-produce it for the MTV generation. One of their worst albums.

Load - Their worst album. Here is Metallica after they've taken a break, gone back into the studio, watched the Alternative Music wave quite literally put a gun into its mouth and blow its brain out and then try and fit in. This is when Metallica decided to stop being innovative and try and write songs that would appeal to the Alternative/Flannel-wearing crowd, as opposed to the dying breed of Metal fans who stopped after Nirvana became big. Here is where metallica officially died.

Reload - Their second worst album. If 'Load' wasn't bad enough here is Metallica at their most MTV-friendly worst.

Garage Inc. - Not even a real album but just a shoddy remake of when they were at their best plus a few remakes of songs that bands like Soundgarden and Nirvana referenced as influences. Nothing special here but one can admit that their version of 'Am I Evil?' was always better when Dave Mustaine was doing it. Let's put it this way, Disc 1 on the two-disc CD is Metallica of the 90's trying to fit in with the Alternative crowd, Disc 2 on the two-disc CD is when Metallica were at their untouchable best. This album gets 50% partial credit.

S & M - These guys were nuts when they decided to do this. I've listened to classical music since before I can remember, and when I heard rumours that a popular heavy metal band were going to do something with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and Michael Kamen I was dubious as to whether or not Deep Purple were going to do something with Ritchie Blackmore back in the fold. But then I heard it was Metallica... this was bad. The album was badly produced, it was pretentious, it was silly, I couldn't take it seriously and overall it was probably the first nail in the coffin for Jason Newsted.

St. Anger - Lars banging on a tin can, James pretending to be angry and fit in with the angry kids who listen to Korn, Slipknot and Limp Bizkit, Kirk not even there, and Bob Rock doing the bass... terrible. This entire album is an attempt by Metallica to fit in with the Nu-Metal scene that was quite prominent in the late 90's and early Millenium. Metallica, of course, fail miserably and release one of the worst albums they've ever made and probably the most disappointing release of 2003 altogether.

    No joo... =)

The year was 1981, the place was Los Angeles. During this period Los Angeles was subject to a new wave of music called 'Hair Metal' which borrowed largely from bands such as Van Halen, The New York Dolls and mixed it with Heavy Metal. Also in this period, a band called Metallica formed with James Hetfield, Ron McGovney, Lars Ulrich and Dave Mustaine. They didn't particularly like the music that was on MTV, they despised MTV, they decided to stay true to the roots of the music and play a new form of music that mixed together bands such as Black Flag, Motorhead, Venom, Discharge, and many other bands that were involved in the Hardcore Punk and NWOBH (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) scene, they didn't like the idea of 'rock stardom' so they were one of the innovators of a form of music that was 'anti-rockstar', Thrash Metal. They made a demo tape called 'No Life 'Til Leather' which was quickly circulated throughout the Metal Underground via tape-trading and they were becoming increasingly popular. Eventually they kicked Ron McGovney and Dave Mustaine out and brought Cliff Burton and Kirk Hammett in.

For the next few years Metallica released 3 albums of sheer quality, then Cliff Burton died. Then they released a 'not bad' effort with '...And Justice For All'. However, what accompanied this album was a video for the song, 'One'. This was the start of their downfall. Metallica started to become a mainstream band by making a video for MTV and having it broadcast many times. After they were a regular feature on MTV, they attracted the attention of a producer called Bob Rock. Bob Rock was the mainman behind bands such as Poison, Ratt and Motley Crue during the 80's, the Hair Metal bands. He helped Metallica produce the ultimate crap which was 'The Black Album', this is where they started drifting further down the sewer but at warp speed.

Over the next few years Metallica became regular pop-stars on MTV, making videos for a few of the songs and eventually going on a North American tour with Guns 'n' Roses. They took a break.

After they came back from their break they had cut their hair off, gone into the studio and started to record their worst album, 'Load', again, with the help of Bob Rock. Bob Rock basically said to Metallica, "Look, Metal is dying, try and write some songs that Nirvana would have made if they had a heavier past". And that is what Metallica did, they made an 'Alternative Record'. Later they appeared on the No. 1 'Alternative Festival' Lollapalooza. They started to make videos for the album and chose 'Until it Sleeps' to kick it off.

They took another break.

They went back into the studio to record 'Reload' with the help of Bob Rock again. They made a few videos for MTV, they appeared on MTV programs more and more, they released a few VHS tapes and they toured for a while.

They took another break.

They went back into the studio and re-recorded the classic 1987 EP 'Garage Days' on a two-disc compilation. The first disc was the worst. It featured songs that weren't really Metallica influences, but more or less influences of bands such as Nirvana and Soundgarden and other 'Alternative' bands. The second disc was much better and it showed Metallica at their best taking influences from such bands as Diamond Head, Motorhead, Discharge and The Misfits. They took these songs to the Roseland Ballroom and did a show for MTV.

Metallica were running out of ideas until one day they thought they could make a lot more money by doing a few shows with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and Michael Kamen as the conductor. This was a clear homage to Deep Purple and what they did many years ago the with London Symphony Orchestra. Anyway, this collaboration led to the making of 'S & M'. They did a few shows, they released a video and a DVD and then they took another break.

The millenium saw an increase in the usage of the Internet by the general public, and during this period a certain way of listening to music came into fruition, MP3's. MP3's were songs from an album or songs from single and EP's that you could put into your computer without having to pay for them. Record companies got a hold of this new phenomenon and started becoming annoyed that they were losing money. At first a few websites were set up that deal in MP3's but then a new way of downloading MP3's began. This was called 'P2P' or 'Peer-to-Peer File Sharing' and was headed by such organisations as Napster, Scour and Kazaa, but Napster was the most popular. A few months pass when Metallica decide to file a law-suit against Napster because they feel both they and the music industry were losing money out of it. Eventually Napster ran out of finances for the legal process and decided to charge people to download songs.

2003 saw the departure of bassist Jason Newsted, who was replaced by Rob Trujillo (Suicidal Tendencies & Ozzy Osbourne). In the studio (again with Bob Rock), they produced 'St. Anger', probably one of their worst albums and definiately the biggest disappointment in their career. Metallica then appeared on an MTV program called 'Metallica Icon' which showcased new talent covering Metallica songs, even though the new talent weren't influenced by Metallica. The sales of 'St. Anger' were below a million and they were quickly losing their fan base, they released an EP to try and capitalise on the low sales later on. Then they did the documentary 'Some Kind of Monster'.

And that, is the basic history of Metallica.

  • Kyllä kuullostaa edelleenkin niin sydämmen purkamiselta että...

"Metallica started to become a mainstream band by making a video for MTV and having it broadcast many times."

Siis... no joo, jos tuo on peruste mainstream musalle, niin yhtä hyvin joku Slayer tai Testament ovat mainstream bändejä. Molemmilla oli mtv:n alkuaikoina videoita puolen yön jälkeen soitossa.

"Metallica were running out of ideas until one day they thought they could make a lot more money by doing a few shows with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and Michael Kamen as the conductor."
