I’m told that Cyprus has until June to get a bailout or it will default. Normally, I would assume nothing gets done until the absolute last minute but this is an exception.
At this point, bank accounts in Cyprus will be drained whether a deposit levy happens or not.
If deposits aren’t taxed and banks re-open they will be cleaned out immediately and that would leave Cyprus with one fewer option. Not to mention, the Eurogroup will be irate.
The question is: how long can the bank holiday last? The current plan is to re-open banks on Thursday but that seems highly unlikely. It would seem as though a best case is to pass the levy this week and re-open on Monday but even that sounds like a stretch.
In the meantime, funds are being pulled out of Cypriot bank accounts in whatever amounts are allowed at the ATM. I saw a quote from a taxi driver in Cyprus saying that all his fares today had been Russians arriving from the airport. - Me maksamme
