Coach Steve Hansen says several years spent finetuning their attacking game has come at the expense of their tackling technique and defensive structure.A desire to stiffen up that aspect is partially behind the return of Wayne Smith to an assistant role in World Cup year.

It suggests the All Blacks aim to be well prepared for what are traditionally tight, low-scoring affairs in the knockout stage of the four-yearly tournament.

“There’s been a plan from day one and part of that plan was making sure we’ve got an attacking game we’re really comfortable with,” Hansen said.

“You’ve got to keep adding to that otherwise you become predictable, and hence that’s probably why our defence hasn’t been a big priority.

“Now we’ve got Smithy back so there will be a little shift over to that side and let’s see if we can sharpen up our defence.”

An All Blacks squad missing 17 players from Super Rugby finalists the Hurricanes and Highlanders are preparing for the historic Test against Samoa in Apia on July 8.

Despite his fine record — he has won 38, drawn two and lost two Tests since taking over as coach in 2012 — Hansen says the world champions can’t afford to adopt the same methods.

The year has a shorter playing schedule and warrants a different attitude because of the big prize on offer on October 31.

“We can’t hide from the fact it’s Rugby World Cup year. What more could you want?” he said.

“It’s been in the back of our minds for some time and is coming more to the forefront.

“We know we can’t sit on the game we’ve got. If we do that then someone’s going to go past us like a shot.”

SOUTH Africa recalled old hands Jaque Fourie and Heinrich Brussow and named eight new caps on Saturday for the run-in to the World Cup.

Centre Fourie and flanker Brussow were among six players returning to the fold after not featuring in a test for the Springboks for at least a year.

Fourie was a 2007 World Cup winner for the Boks.

Brussow last played for his country at the 2011 World Cup.

Fly-half Elton Jantjies, lock Pieter-Steph du Toit, and France-based prop Heinke van der Merwe were also back in coach Heyneke Meyer’s plans, as was centre Frans Steyn, who walked out on the Springboks last year ahead of a game after a disagreement over his contract.

Meyer said captain Jean de Villiers, who sustained a serious knee injury at the end of last year, was still undergoing rehabilitation, and it wasn’t clear yet if he would recover in time for the World Cup in England and Wales, beginning in September.

Before that, the No. 2-ranked Springboks play a World XV next month to open their season, and then have tests against Australia, New Zealand, and two against Argentina to prepare for the showpiece tournament.

Three of the uncapped players came from the Stormers, who topped the South African conference in Super Rugby.

They were props Steven Kitshoff and Vincent Koch, and hooker Scarra Ntubeni.

Three uncapped players from the Lions also made it after their surprisingly good season: scrumhalf Faf de Klerk, centre Lionel Mapoe, and lock Franco Mostert.

The other two new players were Bulls pair Rudy Paige and fullback Jesse Kriel.

SOUTH Africa have celebrated the 20-year anniversary of winning the 1995 World Cup, and a star of that team predicted the Springboks can lift the trophy again this year in England.

Joel Stransky slotted the extra-time drop-goal that delivered a 15-12 triumph over the All Blacks on June 24, 1995 before a Johannesburg crowd including then President Nelson Mandela.

Stransky was among the survivors of that team who gathered at Ellis Park on a warm, sunny, winter afternoon to remember the first of two Springbok World Cup titles.

They included wheelchair-bound scrumhalf Joost van der Westhuizen, who is battling motor neuron disease.

Mandela played a key role in the triumph by publicly backing the Springboks, a team viewed by the black majority of South Africans as a symbol of apartheid.

Stransky, now a pundit for SuperSport, is upbeat about another World Cup triumph.

“I think the Springboks will win the World Cup,” Stransky said.

“Critics say it is an old team, but it is a very experienced team.

“A few youngsters and a couple of real matchwinners can turn a game.

“We can come away with the title — it is certainly possible.”

LIVEWIRE Wales star Liam Williams has undergone foot surgery, leaving him with a potential battle to regain fitness for the World Cup.

The fullback has been retained in Wales’ World Cup camp, but there is no timescale yet on his recovery.

The 24-year-old has become an integral part of coach Warren Gatland’s Wales setup, and would prove a big loss should he fail to beat the problem in time for the kick-off of the World Cup.

Williams dislodged wing Alex Cuthbert in Wales’ Six Nations starting line-up, but is equally adept at fullback, his preferred position.
