An extremist diatribe by a Finnish politician has provoked national outrage and laid bare the perils of including a rightwing populist party in Finland’s governing coalition.
The comments were posted in English on Facebook by Olli Immonen, a member of the Finns party and part of the ruling coalition, under the banner “Finland for the Finns”. Mr Immonen, MP for the northern industrial city of Oulu, called for the defeat of “this nightmare called multiculturalism”.

“I have strong belief in my fellow fighters,” Mr Immonen wrote. “We will fight until the end for our homeland and one true Finnish nation. The victory will be ours.”
The tirade, posted two days after the fourth anniversary of the massacre by the rightwing fanatic Anders Breivik that left 77 dead in neighbouring Norway, caused outrage in Finland.
Juha Sipila, the centre-right prime minister, said on Twitter that he could not accept the attack on multiculturalism by the Finns party MP.

“I want to develop Finland as an open, international, linguistically and culturally rich country,” Mr Sipila said, in remarks echoed on Facebook by the finance mister Alexander Stubb.
The electoral success of the Finns party, formerly called the True Finns, has mirrored the rise of rightwing populist forces in other Nordic nations, giving rise to heated debate among centre-right and centre-left parties about how best to defend the region’s traditions of liberalism and tolerance.

In Norway, the populist Progress party has fallen in the polls since it entered a coalition government with the Conservatives in 2013. The political establishment in Sweden, meanwhile, treats the far-right Sweden Democrats as pariahs, but this has not prevented the party from surging to 18 per cent in the polls. The Danish People’s party last month became Denmark’s second biggest political group after winning 21 per cent of votes in the country’s general election, but opted to stay out of government and instead prop up a minority centre-right administration.

Mr Immonen’s comments led to pressure on Timo Soini, Finland’s foreign minister and leader of the Finns party, to sack the rebel MP. However, Mr Soini said late on Monday that the decision on Mr Immonen’s future was a matter for the parliamentary party.
Pekka Vennamo, a former leader of the Rural party, seen as the precursor of the Finns, speculated whether “Immonen is a Breivik fan” and said his “text reads like an abbreviated version of Breivik’s manifesto”. Opposition parties condemned Mr Immonen’s “hate speech”.
Mr Immonen said his comments had nothing to do with Breivik in a Facebook post on Monday.

Erkka Railo, a political scientist at the University of Turku, said Mr Soini had striven to make his party respectable and fit for government, while maintaining its opposition to immigration and multiculturalism. The party leadership expelled an MP in 2013 after he was photographed making a nazi salute inside parliament.
However, Mr Soini has allowed a hardline wing to remain inside the party, which came second in April’s general election with almost 18 per cent of the vote.

“Immonen is more or less pushing Soini to take a stand and make a decision whether he wants to subscribe to this anti-immigration ideology,” Mr Railo said. “Soini, in contrast, wants desperately not to make this final call. His silence is deafening.”
The Finns party leadership reprimanded Mr Immonen in June after he published a photograph posing with members of the so-called Finnish Resistance Movement, a neo-nazi group, at the grave of Eugen Schauman, a Finnish nationalist who assassinated the Russian governor-general of Finland in 1904, when the country was a province of the Russian empire. The photograph was seen as potentially condoning political terrorism.
Mr Immonen, who critics say has even grown a beard like Breivik’s, has previously suggested compiling a register of the ethnicity of the Finnish population.

Mr Soini threatened to bring down the government this month if Finland backed a new bailout for Greece. Finland has been among countries taking a hard line against Greece, enthusiastically backing austerity and demanding collateral from Athens in exchange for loans.
