THERE were now "about four jobs" for every candidate in a list of hard-to-fill categories, according to a senior executive in the recruitment industry.
Richard Parnell, chief executive of the Australian operation of global recruitment firm Robert Walters, said accountants, engineers and even solicitors were getting very hard to find.
Mr Parnell said the candidate shortage had become so acute, particularly in the accounting and finance area that Robert Walters had sponsored 110 people itself in the past year that were then contracted to clients.
"We need to open up the visa arrangements to travellers from places like Scandinavia, Holland, Germany - as long as they had good English skills - and allow them to stay with one employer for six months to a year," Mr Parnell said.
