THE 30 MOST IMPORTANT THRASH ALBUMS OF ALL TIME
I've decided to compile a list of the most important thrash metal albums ever. The things I have taken into consideration is
1. How groundbreaking the album was in sound and style
2. How popular the album is and what it has done for the popularity of the scene.
3. What importance the album has had for it's region
1. VENOM - WELCOME TO HELL
The first extreme metal album has of course taken the first place. In a time when extreme punk was harder than metal Venom took everyone by surprise and disgust (parents) and they changed the way we look at metal. It was harder, more occult & faster than anything before. This was the beginning of all extreme genres of metal. Compare this album to other albums of 1981, the closest you can come in sheer agression is perhaps Motörhead and they where miles away from Venom.
2. METALLICA - KILL 'EM ALL
In 1983 Metallica took the early embryo of Venom, Raven, Mercyful Fate and likes but played it even faster than what Venom had done just years before. Metallica dethroned Venom as the fastest metal band on earth and Kill 'em all is still today as popular as ever before. A timeless classic and the beginning of a new era.
3. VENOM - BLACK METAL
Venom's second album was a step in the right direction for the Newcastle based trio. It was even harder than their debut and it even named the upcoming black metal scene. But by todays standard this has more to do with thrash metal. The second thrash metal album to ever be released and it was the hardest album up to that point. In 1982 we wheren't spoiled with these kind of metal albums.
4. SLAYER - REIGN IN BLOOD
By 1986 thrash has started to take fold for real and Slayer refined it's sound in 1986. The raw sound wasn't there anymore. This was speed with a clear sound and it didn't take long for the critics to hail it as the best thrash metal album in the world. Slayer had done what Metallica did with Kill 'em all just 3 years later, they took it to another level. The most popular extreme metal album ever has to be high on a list like this one.
5. METALLICA - MASTER OF PUPPETS
Another 1986 album. Master of puppets is perhaps Metallica's most popular album besides the black album and Metallica drawn attention from all kinds of media with this one. Metallica became one of the bigger metal bands in the world with this release. One of the few albums that can compete with Reign in Blood in popularity.
6. METALLICA - ...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL
Another 'tallica album. Why you might wonder, one reason: ...And justice for all is the most sold thrash metal album ever. The song "One" made Metallica even bigger than before, by now there wasn't a metal head that hadn't heard Metallica before. Metallica really became the flagship for thrash metal by 1989.
7. SLAYER - SHOW NO MERCY
Let'ss go back to 1983. Kill 'em all was speeding up things but let's not forget about Slayer's debut which was more evil than Metallicas debut and perhaps even as fast. You really have to read magazines from 1983 to understand what big thing Show no mercy really was cause today people seem to forget.
8. KREATOR - PLEASURE TO KILL
Not a list without any teutonic thrash. Pleasure to Kill was the album that took Europe with storm. One of the most aggressive albums of 1986 and Europe, well especially Germany was boiling with power and it was unleashed fully with Pleasure to Kill. You can't discuss extreme German metal without mentioning this LP.
9. MEGADETH - PEACE SELLS... BUT WHO'S BUYING?
After a successful debut Megadeth was heading for the top. Peace sells... made Megadeth an arena band over a night. By this album it stood clear that Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax where the big names in american thrash metal.
10. EXODUS - BONDED BY BLOOD
This album would perhaps be even higher if it was released as intended in 1984, but it had to wait another year. BBB made Exodus a name and the Bay area movement was on it's way up owing much to the Exodus excellent debut. The vocals where like nothing heard before.
11. METALLICA - RIDE THE LIGHTNING
Another groundbreaking album. Faster, harder and more professional than on Kill 'em all. Adding a ballad also which drawn much attention to Metallica's second offering. It's unbelievable that they could have such sound on an 1984 release.
12. CELTIC FROST - MORBID TALES
Another 1984 release. If Metallica was hard Celtic Frost is hard as hell! Together with Hellhammer Tom Warrior took Venom's sound and brought it to another level. Not even Slayer could match the intensity in Morbid Tales.
13. ANTHRAX - FISTFUL OF METAL
The New Yorkers first release was from late 1983 and they where one of the originators in the genre. Fistful of metal isn't as popular today as it once where and that's a shame, otherwise it might have been even higher than on 13:th place.
14. PANTERA - COWBOYS FROM HELL
Many hardcore thrash fans might disagree but the texas cowboys made thrash metal incredibly popular by 1990 even if the sound was remarkably refined. Darrells guitarplay and Anselmos aggro style set the standard for many years to go.
15. SEPULTURA - BENEATH THE REMAINS
South america has always been a mekka for extreme metal but it wasnt until Beneath the remains Europe and North America got aware of their qualities. Beneath the remains opened up the portal and it was very important for the South american scene.
16. S.O.D. - SPEAK ENGLISH OR DIE
Crossover? yes!, The kind of metal Hirax, Nuclear Assault and others made popular was created more or less by S.O.D., a side project of Anthrax. The album is still remembered 20 years late, how many other sideprojects can say that? Punk and metal = A crossover classic!
17. POSSESSED - SEVEN CHURCHES
Possessed was more important for death metal fans as it is the first death metal album. Still it has thrash influences and it was the extremest metal album of 1985 and perhaps still. the horrid vocals by Jeff Becerra is still imitated by fans of extreme metal.
18. SLAYER - HELL AWAITS
Made Slayer's popularity grow and it has one of the most memorable intros ever. An important piece of vinyl for the whole thrash scene but especially it made Slayer more than a one hit wonder with their debut.
19. WATCHTOWER - ENERGETIC DISASSEMBLY
Watchtower??? you might think. But listen to this album and check out what year it from..., 1985??? Progthrash was born and it's father was Watchtower. Far more complexed than anything heard before. A classic in the progthrash field.
20. TESTAMENT - THE LEGACY
In 1987 when most bands had already peaked a new Bay area band finally released their debut. And it was the start of a long succesful era and today it's regarded as one of the milestones in the Bay Area movement.
21. KAT - 666 (re-released as Metal and Hell with english vocals)
The most obscure band in the whole list is Poland's KAT. KAT was the first extreme metal band from Poland and it was of the first bands from the east to release an album outside it's country's border. Quite obscure today but still remembered by a few as groundbreakers.
22. VIO-LENCE - ETERNAL NIGHTMARE
Another Bay area classic. Vio-lence was a band that where on the right time in the right city. Today highly regarded by thrashers and it's one of the milestones in from San Francisco. With speed that wasn't common in the scene before Vio-lence they took a few steps in the same direction as Nuclear Assault and similar.
23. HELLHAMMER - APOCALYPTIC RAIDS
In 1984 Hellhammer debuted and in an old Metal Forces magazine that I have, the reviewer is completely shocked with the utterly horrid sound of Apocalyptic Raids. Still shocking today and an important piece in the extreme metal history. Europe's first extreme metal album.
24. DESTRUCTION - INFERNAL OVERKILL
Destructions first full length album must of course be on this list. Today Infernal Overkill is hailed as one of the best german thrash albums, maybe not that unusual in style and image but with high class thrash Destruction made themselves kings of germany togheter with Sodom and Kreator.
25. ARTILLERY - FEAR OF TOMORROW
The very first scandinavian full length thrash album was made by none other than Artillery. Released on Neat in 1985 and the advanced music it had made them respected by thousands. But today the hype around Artillery isn't what it once used to be.
25. EXODUS - TEMPO OF THE DAMNED
An album that is very important today. It has been seen on TV in various countries and it carries the world of thrash on it's shoulders. Hopefully this album can reawake the interest in thrash metal fully. It has at least done a whole lot for Exodus popularity.
26. ANTHRAX - AMONG THE LIVING
The second release by Anthrax with Belladonna at the mic made them even more popular than before. And it's from the year 1986 a year that thrash metal became one of the most loved genres in metal and Anthrax was one of the main reasons why.
27. FORBIDDEN - FORBIDDEN EVIL
Bay Area thrash!! Forbidden was heading for the top but they changed their sound away from thrash. But on Forbidden Evil their sound is perfected. By then an underground classic. Today, a thrash metal classic.
28. ONSLAUGHT - POWER FROM HELL
England had a thrash scene that most people are unaware of but Power From Hell changed that fact once and for all. A classic in every sense that spawned the interest in English thrash metal.
29. ANNIHILATOR - ALICE IN HELL
The guitargod from Canada was by 1989 more popular than ever. With a guitarvirtuoso and real catchy songs that had elements from Judas Priest, Iron Maiden etc made Annihilator a band for the big magazines. New stars on the thrash metal field was born.
30. SODOM - IN THE SIGN OF EVIL
Another 1984 release, it was Sodom's debut and the first album in a long successful era. One of the most popular extreme metal albums from Germany and a groundbreaking album, together with Celtic Frost this was the heaviest album up to that point. - mill
