Risk Factors
Background
Hepatitis C is transmitted in a parenteral fashion (Table 1). The most common risk factor for hepatitis C is intravenous drug use.[1] Before 1992 -- before the introduction of blood donor screening and surrogate hepatitis tests -- transfusion of blood or plasma-derived products was associated with significant risk of transmission of hepatitis C.[6] Other potential risk factors for hepatitis C include intranasal cocaine use, tattooing,[7,8] body piercing, accidental needle-stick injury,[9] and the sharing of household items. Tattooing warrants special mention. The risk factors that appear to be associated with hepatitis C infection and tattoos include tattoo size, the number of tattoos, and obtaining a tattoo at a commercial tattoo parlor.[8] These findings have led some municipalities to require parental consent for minors before commercial tattoo placement.
