"Testi" kulttuurienvälinen

Tänä monikulttuuristen suhteiden palstana minulla on esittää J. Välimäen artikkelista "Basic concepts of intercultural communication" ja Bennetin sanoihin perustuen ihmisen monikulttuurisiin suhteisiin liittyvät vaiheet.

Olisinkin halukas tietämään missä näette itsenne ja miten se mahdollisesti ilmentyy teissä.

a) You "are unable to construe cultural differences in complex ways. You probably live in relative isolation from other cultures. Either you do not perceive cultural differences at all, or you can conceive only of broad categories such as "foreigner"."

b) You "are better able to construe cultural differences, but you see them in a negative light. You combat the threat of change to your stable worldview by denigrating others with negative stereotypes and by attaching positive stereotypes to yourself."

c) You "try to bury cultural differences within already familiar categories that are physically and philosophically similar. You recognize and accept superficial cultural differences such as eating customs and other social norms, but you assume that deep down all people are essentially the same - just human."

d) You "enjoy recognizing and exploring cultural differences. You are fairly tolerant of ambiguity and are comfortable knowing there is no one right answer. This does not mean that you has to agree with or take on a cultural perspective other than yours. It means rather that you accept the viability of different cultural ways of thinking and behaving, even though you might not like them."

e) You "use knowledge about your own and others' cultures to intentionally shift into a different cultural frame of reference, i.e. you can empathize or take another person's perspective in order to understand and be understood across cultural boundaries."

f) You "are trying to reconcile the sometimes conflicting cultural frames that you have internalized. As you move into integration, you achieve an identity which allows you to see yourself as "interculturalist" or "multiculturalist", in addition to your national and ethnic background."

a)"Denial. People at this stage may use stereotypes when they talk about "foreigners", not to denigrate them but because they only know one or two things about them."

b) "Defence. They view their own culture as the height of "development" and tend to evaluate other cultures as "underdeveloped"."

c) "Minimization. People at this stage are considerably more knowledgeable than those in denial and a lot nicer than those in defence, they are still ethnocentric in their adherence to these culture-bound universalistic assumptions."

d) "Acceptance. At this stage, people have moved beyond ethnocentric rules for behaviour and may not yet have developed ethnorelative principles for taking action."

e) "Adaptation. People at this stage can modify their behaviour in ways that make it more appropriate to cultures other than their own."

f) "Integration. People in integration are inclined to interpret and evaluate behaviour from a variety of cultural frames of reference, so that there is never a single right or wrong answer."

"A person who has gone through all six stages of development has arrived at a true understanding of another culture without being assimilated in the process."
