Are 16-24 Hour Weigh-ins Good for Powerlifting?
Submitted by Staff on April 29, 2009 - 9:11am.
On his way to setting the new all-time total record in the 220 pound weight class on Saturday, Matt Kroczaleski cut an astounding 35 pounds in the 24 hours leading up to weigh-ins. Kroczaleski weighed in at 220.5 pounds and put 30 of those pounds back on to compete at 250 pounds.
Most powerlifting federations allow a 16 or 24 hours weigh-in. The UPA, where Kroczaleski competed, utilizes a 24 hour one. When the WPO existed, it featured 48 hours weigh-ins.
Cutting weight is also prevalent in other sports, like boxing, MMA, and wrestling, which feature weight class divisions.
However, some have questioned whether competing as a 220 while actually weighing in as a 275 is fair. A discussion of that appears at WannaBeBig. While it is clear that Kroczaleski played by the rules found in powerlifting, are 16-24 hours weigh-ins good for the sport? Are they fair? Should same day weigh-ins be the standard across all federations?
