The cells in the skin that produce pigment are called melanocytes. The pigment is called melanin. Melanin in the skin provides essential protection against ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
The soles of the feet and the palms of the hands are the parts of the body's surface that are least likely to be exposed to the sun, regardless of which country you live in or how you dress!
Friction removes the skin cells faster then melanin can be produced so the skin is a lighter shade.
