Add the 5 Series to the list of 2001 BMW models
recalled due to defective underhood cooling fans
and fan switches that could overheat and catch
fire. The amended recall more than doubles the
number of affected vehicles to 50,417 in the
United States (171,000 worldwide).
BMW is also extending the time period for
recalled vehicles, in some cases to vehicles
produced through June 15—more than two months
after the company initially learned of the
potential defect.
The recalled 2001 vehicles are 3 Series with
manual transmissions (Feb. 1 to May 14
production); 5 Series (Jan. 16 to June 13
production); 7 Series (Nov. 1, 2000, to Jan. 8
production); X5s (Dec. 18, 2000, to June 15
production); and Z8s (Jan. 1 to May 31
production). Contact BMW at (800) 831-1117 for
more information.
