"This is why women always, always lose the recomp game. They spend so much time and effort bringing down the bodyfat, yet once they get there, they don't have the lean body mass to support it. On top of that they go on "permanant cuts".
It starts with the innocent yet horribly flawed statement "I need to lose X pounds". For some reason women and the number on the scale mean more than anything. So they base their whole plan on an arbitrary number on the scale, as opposed to body composition or (god forbid), the mirror.
Next they decide to cut calories (with no intention of ever bringing them back up). Then they throw themselves headlong into a cardio scheme(without any consideration towards progressive adaptation).
So what happens? Eventually they lose a few pounds, 90% of that is usually whatever muscle they had in the first place. This is a result of crappy crash dieting for the most part. Second, they plateau. This is a result of
a. Not adjusting cardio(which is a short term solution anyway) to match the body's adaptations. As if doing the same time/frequency/intensity on the (insert cardio equipment here) will have the same effect 3 months from now.
b. The body has been in a caloric deficiency for so long it has adjusted metabolic function to match. Congrats, you've now trained your body to survive on 900 calories a day. Of course, that's not surprising considering they have no lean body mass to upkeep.
So now they've dug themselves into a hole, a really f*cking deep hole. From this point out any cardio you do is pointless, any extra calories you take in will immediately be stored as fat(do not pass go, do do not collect $200). There's no place to go but down.
That's why 99% of women fail."
