Nordstrom puts Yorba Linda teen's dress design ont

For Rayah Shapiro, a senior at Yorba Linda High School, winning a design contest held by Nordstrom was a “step in the right direction” toward her dream of becoming a fashion designer.

“I was really excited and happy,” Shapiro, who turned 18 Wednesday, said. “It was a confirmation to me that I can make it and succeed in fashion design, regardless what others say.”

Starting in November, her original dress design – a shift dress with breezy open stitching and a yoke scoop back – has been carried in some Nordstrom stores’ juniors sections, known as the BP. departments. It was chosen out of 178 entries submitted from across the country for a Nordstrom design contest held earlier this year for high school juniors and seniors.

“Not only was our Nordstrom Product Group impressed with Rayah’s sketch and design taste, she also stood out because of her attention to detail,” Jennifer Jackson Brown, Nordstrom vice president, said in an email. “Rayah provided a thorough description of her garment, including fabric content, pricing and even proper care instructions.”

The dress is available in black and ivory at select Nordstrom stores, including Brea, Mission Viejo and Cerritos, and at Nordstrom. It retails for $48.

Shapiro said her inspiration for the dress came from what she thought she and her friends would wear and what was trending.

“I created a dress similar to the T-shirt dress, which is very popular, but added my own personal flairs, such as low back, high neckline and lace appliques,” Shapiro said. , It took her about an hour to design the dress, she said, and she offered front, side and back views.

Shapiro was part of the 2014-15 Nordstrom BP. Fashion Board program when she entered the contest. The theme of the internship-like program for high school juniors and seniors was “How to Create a Fashion Line,” and each month participants met to discuss a different stage in the process, such as trend forecasting, sketching and visual merchandising, Brown said.

In August, Shapiro visited Nordstrom corporate headquarters in Seattle to meet with the design team. That’s where she saw a sample of her dress for the first time.

“I’ve always loved fashion,” Shapiro said. Her favorite designer and biggest inspiration, she said, is Mara Hoffman. “It’s a hard career to get into and thrive, but I’ve had this opportunity and hopefully I’ll do well.”

Shapiro’s involvement with the Nordstrom BP. Fashion Board also led to a seasonal job at the Nordstrom store in Brea. She works about 20 hours a week in the juniors department, but now that she is 18, she will be promoted to a salesperson and will increase her hours.

Shapiro, who said she loves the beach, is in the process of applying to various design schools across the country. She says her dream is to design a beach brand that includes bathing suits, lingerie, sportswear and possibly accessories.

“My advice for anyone trying to become a fashion designer is to take every opportunity you can get and chase your dreams,” Shapiro said. “If you never try, you’ll never learn.”Source: http://www.sheindressau.com
