Wow!!! Man YAMAHA DGX-505 is the instrument that makes your dreams come true!!! It’s great for music lovers of all genres. Inside, you will find so many useful options such as built in effects, great and a unique never before heard piano sounds from the other brands like ROLAND and many others!!!. I promise you that you will never feel embarrassed with the sounds, looks and very useful features with the price that can't break the BANK while performing anywhere even inside the very best musical Places!!! And you will never get sleepy with the number of the voices inside because it has plenty for about 500. It will take you in a long ride!! The other features I liked was the smart media card slot so by this you can have an endless musical creations to transfer to your computer and even the keys are not Fully Weighted, it is not comparable to any other brands because it has the best touch and feel when it comes to light weighted keys!! All I can say is buy it!

The Yamaha DGX-500 was a very popular digital piano. The 505 adds USB, Smart Media capability, and more great features than the average person will ever use. Yamaha took a great product and made it even better. The sound is just terrific and I'm often amazed that I'm listening to a $600 keyboard. All I really expected was a keyboard that had good piano and organ sounds. The DGX-505 certainly came through, and greatly exceeded my expectations. I've had this piano for about six weeks now, and I'm still just as thrilled with it as I was the day I bought it. No regrets here. I'd buy it again in a second.

Ugly, but versatile

Okay, it's an ugly upright--I can't call it just a keyboard with the stand. But looks aside, it is a value of features.
With the XGlite set and full keyboard, the 505 does give a lot of bang for the buck. The sounds are sampled well for the most part, and while the ten or so piano sounds (some from XG) are mostly well sampled, they all lack a certain punch. After trying headphones, I've decided that this is more due to the built in speakers than the samples. It's too soft.
The educator accompaniment is well designed, as it works from the basic-follow-the-student trying out the right or left hand alone at their own pace, all the way up to the full score at the proper tempo, giving the pupil a grade at the end.
There are so many features on the 505, it would be pointless to name them all. Besides the education and accompaniment, the other feature that stands out most are the drum sets. They're very real and quite complete.
We also bought the valdesta concerto 500 from music 123 (see review there), which has excellent sound, is very pretty, but lacks features.
Again, our biggest gripe with the 505 is the poor sound system. But that can be remedied through an after market amplifier and speaker set (making it yet uglier but so much more professionally sounding). I'm giving it 4 stars, though 4.5 would be closer.

Having read the other reviews of this item, it is interesting to me that someone complained that the keys are not "weighted". I will agree with them that the keys do not feel like the stiff unyeilding keys of some pianos however, my much loved and much played but still wonderful baby grand has keys that feel very similar. Having taught piano and various other instruments for many years, if you are not in the market for a "real" piano or don't have the space or move around a lot, then this one will serve very well. I have this as well as my "real" piano. I play them both regularly and have no problem going back and forth. Neither do my students whether they are beginners or advanced. This is well worth the price tag!

Does not come with a bench, December 12, 2004
Reviewer: R. Lopez - See all my reviews
I have been pricing this piano for some time. There are some retailer that will package the keyboard with the bench (usually around $90 alone) but that would be a deal from that retailer. Normally it does not come with a bench.
Also, don't be mislead by the description of "wood sides." This is simulated wood aka particle board. The bench is merely a small stool. Emphasis on small. It is NOT like a piano bench where the tops lifts to store music and it is at least 2.5 feet long. This bench had only the four legs and a padded top, no storage compartment and it measures only about one foot long. Now the colors of the partical board on the keyboard stand do match the bench color but really, putting the bench next to the keyboard does not make it look more like a piano. I think the bench looks cheap. Certainly not worth the $100 price tag when you include tax and any shipping. But if you want something that matches then it may be worth it to you.
I am looking for the exact difference between the 500 and 505. I have also seen models that show AD (DGX505AD). I assume that the AD stands for power adapter but really shouldn't all models come with the adapter, not just the AD models? What are ALL of the differences between the 500 and 505. I scoured the yamaha website but didn't find the answer.

Please help me with information, December 12, 2004
Reviewer: W. Joh - See all my reviews
I am trying to find out if this item comes with a bench. One of the reviewers indicated, "the bench makes really makes it resemble piano", but Amazon has responded to my inquiry stating that it does not come with a bench even though they can't physically inspect the item to be sure. I am sorry if this is inappropriate, but I really need someone's help.

An excellent digital piano. I love it!, September 13, 2004
Reviewer: V. Messner (PA, United States) - See all my reviews
I'm very pleased with this product. The DGX-500 was a popular and highly-touted digital piano in its price range. The DGX-505 does everything the 500 did, and adds USB, Smart Media capability, and other great features. I'm not going to compare this to a $2,000 or $3,000 piano, because that's ridiculous. If you were in the market for a $3,000 piano, you wouldn't be browsing in the $600 price range. For the average person, just looking to have home access to a full-featured digital piano, the Yamaha DGX-505 is perfect. It has more features than most people will ever need, and the sound is excellent. I also really like the look of the wooden side panels and the bench that came with it. The bench really makes it resemble a piano - rather than just a keyboard with a fancy stand. I have no regrets at all about buying this digital piano, and I can't imagine upgrading for many years. I'd buy this again in a second.

Buying for your budding pianist? Keys are NOT weighted., August 24, 2004
Reviewer: Computerboy (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) - See all my reviews
If you're planning on buying this keyboard for your gifted child please be advised that my online and showroom research indicates that the old DGX-500 (that the DGX-505 replaces) got rave reviews except for the fact that the keys are not weighted. And neither are the ones on the new DGX-505.
In other words, if you're a non-musical parent like me, this means that they do NOT have the feel of a REAL piano. For example, the better Clavinova line has ... "The GH (Graded Hammer effect) keyboard uses a weighted mechanism and grade-weighted keys (gradually heavier, top to bottom) to provide a natural feel."
As it was explained to me, it's like an old typewriter that you had to really whack the keys to make it print as opposed to the new electronic computer keyboards that we now use.
I'm told that if you learn on a regular piano you can easily play the keyboard, BUT, if you learn on the keyboard you'll have to relearn the weight and feel of a real piano and build the muscles in your hands.
Additionally, and Yamaha seems to be the king of electronic instruments, the tone of the various ranges of their instruments vary with the price.
So, if your junior pianist really has an ear for music, it may be to your advantage to step up in price and quality.
The CLP-130, from their Clavinova line is a beauty and sounds like a large grand piano costing thousands more.
The other difference is that the 505 is more of a multitasking, crazy, zany, music making machine, while the CLP line is a real (digital) piano with lots of extra features and truly magnificent sound from the 130 up.
Availability for the 505 says September 15th here at Amazon.com but you may find them now just under $600. The CLP-130 will run you just under $2,000 but sounds like a million bucks.
If junior's worth it go for it!
Did I mention that they come with headphones!
En tiedä tuosta, mutta mulla on ollu kotikiipparina DGX-200 ja kadun että luovuin siitä. Pianosaundihan niissä on huippu ja muutenkin saundivalikoimassa löytyy.
