Trick Five: A Mind Reading Trick
This is a very creepy trick which uses the digital root of a number – the sum of its digits. Take a 5 digit number x and rearrange its digits to give a second 5 digit number y. Subtract the smaller of these two numbers from the larger to give a third number z . WARNING: make sure that you do the subtraction carefully otherwise the trick won’t work.
It is a mathematical fact that the digital root of z is always a multiple of 9. (This applies for any starting number x irrespective of the number of digits it has.) We now exploit this fact to our advantage. If one of the digits of z is concealed, and the remaining digits are disclosed then the hidden digit can be found by adding up the given digits and making up the sum to the nearest multiple of 9.
Note how the operation of changing the order of the digits of x and the subtractions seems, to the audience, to complicate the answer z. In fact it introduces a mathematical regularity, and this gives the basis of the trick.

Valitse viisinumeroinen luku x. sekoita x:n numerot jotenkin ja saat viisinumeroisen luvun y. vähennä pienempi isommasta ja saat luvun z.
Nyt z on jaollinen yhdeksällä (eli z:n numeroiden summa on jaollinen 9:llä). Nyt jos z:sta paljastetaan yhtä lukuunottamatta muut numerot, voit kertoa viimeisen numeron laskemalla paljastettujen numeroiden summan ja lisäämällä siihen numeron x siten että summa on jaollinen 9:llä. Nyt siis x on etsitty luku.
Mitenkäs se toimii? Kokeillaan.
Valitaan luvuksi vaikka 35193. Toiseksi luvuksi 19533. Nyt pitää vähentää:
35193-19533 = 15660.
Sitten peitetään viimeinen numero, ja annetaan tehtävä arvattavaksi viattomalle uhrillemme:
1566*. Mikä on viimeinen numero?
Hmm, summan pitää olla jaollinen yhdeksällä. Siispä lasketaan 1 5 6 6=18. Se on jaollinen yhdeksällä. Siihen täytyy siis lisätä 0 tai 9, että jaollisuus säilyy.
Tulikin kaksi vastausta! Voi kauhistus sentään!
Tein varmasti jotain väärin. Tai sitten trikki on rikki.
