Ihan siitä alkaen, että ”average” tarkoittaa keskiarvoa, jonka laskeminen (edes periaatteessa) edellyttää, että suureet on mitattu tai ilmaistu suhdeasteikolla.

Minulle average tarkoittaa matemaattisesti määritellyn keskiarvon ohella myös vähemmän eksaktia keskinkertaisuutta, keskimääräisyyttä, keskitasoisuutta tms. – ja saattaapa tarkoittaa eri merkityksessään myös merivahinkoa eli haveria (haaveria).
