My name's Vyacheslav, I'm Russian and I live in Viipuri. I am Vyborger, not only as a citizen, but as a part of the town, as a cell in alive organism.
My grandfather moved here in 1945 and his grandfather was Finnish and lived here before Winter War. I love Viipuri not like just a place where I live but like a person. The town for me is alive organism with its own character.
Now Viipuri is about to be completely destroyed, and if we don't stop this process, the town will die.
Russian government is always saying to us that the situation here is great and that we live in the best country in the whole world. In schools they teach our children to think and to be sure that Russians are the strongest and the best nation and at the same time that foreign people are insignificance and other countries are enemies, willing only to destroy "the greatest Russia"! Nowadays politics propaganda is much stronger then it was in Soviet era. But if to observe the facts one will see that Russia is absolutely weak now. Most of factories in Viipuri are shut down, the agriculture is destroyed, and whole villages are dying, leaving just small barns and overgrown field. The population of suburb is falling very fast, people are leaving for Moscow or St.Petersburg. For last 2 years our salaries here fell twice!
Viipuri is losing its cultural heritage, Finnish buildings are destroying, cause there is "no money to repair them"! Some of them are about to be unbuilt. Ecology of the town and suburb is destroyed, landfills of household rubbish and industrial waste everywhere - in the forest, along the roads and on the banks of bay and lakes! Despite efforts of cultural organisations the town is near it's end.
But before WW Viipuri was the cultural capital of Finland, beautiful island of peace under the grey sky of austere north. It was highly praised by many Finnish and Russian poets, writers, artists and musicians. Now Viipuri is held in invaders hands and I think it's a great historical mistake and a great tragedy for all Finns!
As the citizens of Finland you can fix the situation. You should speak of your opinion openly and require the returns of this land. I'm afraid to think about it, but there are only some years left before all Finnish heritages will be lost and Viipuri will not be Viipuri any more! Finnish people must show initiative and then perhaps your government will rise this question in dialogue with our president. It will be the first step on the way to restore the justice.
We are tied here! We cannot require anything openly and any of our tries will definitely be depressed by police. And I know it could sound strange but there are people on this side who are interested in returning Viipuri back to Finland. Russia is very weak now, it depends on Europe much. The time for actions has come. Please, be active! We have to do something. Unless they will destroy everything and we'll lose Viipuri forever!

Thanks for your writing! The situation in Viipuri is worsening, even if there has been also some good progress over there. But in the overall picture the only lasting solution would be the return of Viipuri back to its owner, Finland and Finns.
Many Finnish people are speaking, writing and acting in different ways for the return of Karelia back to Finland, but unfortunately our government and parliament members are weak and they are not interested in the whole issue. They think that what is lost that is lost forever.
We must hope, however, that in the future we will get new political leaders with vision and courage to offer open talks and negotiations to Russian leaders about the Karelian question. The main point is that returning Karelia and Viipuri back to Finland would be good for Finland but also for Russia. Russia and St Petersburg would benefit greatly, if Finland would put order and economical growth in action in Karelia.

Very nice to get your opinion about this issue!
I think that this whole Karelia issue is quite sensitive issue in Finland. The "finlandization" has been very strong in the era of soviet union, and it is still today, much milder though. Finnish policymakers and media are toadying towards USSR/ Russia and they have been telling to Russia that we don't have any demands about the land. And also finnish policymakers & media have put the thought that the land is in very bad condition today, and to have it back would be more like a bad thing than a good one, into Finnish people's minds. Also Russia seems not to be interested of returning Karelia to it's real owners.
Some finnish people think that the renovation of the land would cost too much, and also Finland has already a lot of state loan. What they don't seem to understand is that putting money in it makes a profit, jobs, turism etc... They just think it as a waste land..
Also some people don't want the area's russian population. They think there would be a lot of expenses, because we would need to give the russians the same quality of life as we Finns have... and some are thinking that are the russians even eager to build Finnish society, to go to work, and to obey the law and other people think that Finland would Russify because of that population..they want the land back without the russians;" Finns had 2 days to leave from Karelia, let's be so kind and give them one week to pack their belongings and leave", of course that is not possible, that would be aganst human rights...
Summa summarum: The policymakers don't seem to be interested (or else they are so scared) to do any actions. There are some people who have been brainwashed to think there is nothing good on having the land back, of course there are also the people who want it eagerly back... The fact truly is that Karelia and the other areas would be in better state if Finns would own them.
But let's see, maybe there will be some actions during and after the next parliament and president elections...- zhelezovv
Yes, I've heard about this statistics. I don’t understand Finnish fears concerning economic future of this region. Though it’s destroyed much it can be economically and culturally useful for Finland. Most of investments for rebuilding this region will come from Russian Finnish and EU private companies. There is a possibility to make Karelia free economic zone, and it will attract more investments. Only about four or five years of reasonable economic politic will need to make Karelia prosperous part of Finland.
As for Russians living here now, most of them will be forced to leave (soldiers and officials) the others will leave according their political views. Not more then 25-30% of Russians will stay here, most of them of working age (20-45y.o.). For first five years (while the process of integration) 15-25% will leave Karelia, ‘cause they won’t be able to accustom for new lifestyle or because of the others personal troubles.
Totally here will stay just about 40000 people, who won’t affect citizens of Finland and won’t make a danger of russification in this region. Most of Russians living in Karelia now visit Finland often and know Finnish laws well. They will integrate Finnish society easily and become a part of it fastly.
But it is just my theory.
